a woman of Bangkok

Buy From Aberystwyth With Love from the Guardian bookshop

"All my life I have been fascinated by tales of those vagabond souls who go off searching for promised lands and Shangri-las. People who sailed beyond the dawn driven by the belief that the other man's grass skirt was always greener. It's probably why I have devoted my life to chronicling those spiritual misfits, the people of Aberystwyth."

1. The Quiet American by Graham Greene

Ostensibly it is about the eponymous quiet American – a naive and idealistic CIA agent in Saigon during the French colonial war of the 50s. But what lingers is the relationship between the world-weary newspaper correspondent, Fowler, and his beautiful girl Phuong. Greene perfectly skewers the superfluity of western notions of love that invariably inform such situations. Undermining the idyll is the mercenary elder sister, painfully aware of the need to use Phuong's beauty to secure a provider for the family while her beauty still has currency.
2. A Woman of Bangkok by Jack Reynolds

One night in Bangkok, so the song goes, makes a hard man humble. The city is, in fact, a combine harvester for the ex-pat male heart. Jack Reynolds captures the ethos perfectly in this, the definitive account, written 50 years ago. A young and unworldly Englishman is posted to Bangkok and falls for a beautiful dancing girl in the Bolero nightclub. The girl requites his love by spit-roasting him with scorn, and turning him into a chump. Reynolds chronicles the various stages of his downfall, without mercy. Read it before you get posted, but don't expect it to save you.

Sorry BM, I haven't got a scooby doo what he's on about. Can someone go around to his house and see if he's OK?

Where's this post going? How adept is Izzie at cheese rolling? How does spit roasting add to the Udon Map knowledge base? Why hasn't Arjay locked this one up yet? Why does Khun Paul post nonsense? Why does a delusional Ulick believe he's a real Irishman?

Westers, I think Izzix, or rather his quote, (which again he hasn't given the link to), is saying read the book before you get posted to Bangkok with your job. Though even if you do read the book, it is doubtful that it will save you from the guiles of Bangkok women! ;)

The subsequent comments are all scooby doo to me too. ;) Unless of course they are advocating that Izzix is spit roasted for posting so much irrelevant rubbish, in which case I'd go along with that! ;)

Thanks, Arjay. I still think it might be an idea to pop around to his house to see if he's alright though and it may only be a 5 minute drive for you, just be careful of tasty Farangs looking for trouble.

It looks like the man from the Aberystwyth book shop is the source, perhaps an Izzix' local bookshop sales flyer, thus no Internet link.

Stop giving Izzie a hard time chaps, it is perfectly clear what the post is about.
An American CIA agent is posted to Bangkok using the cunning plan of being a Welsh, Cheese salesman. There he meets a humble English Combine Harvester salesman and they concoct an evil ploy to take over Siam by spit roasting young native girls with corn but the two young Thai heroines foil their dastardly doings by using their beauty as currency. Before fleeing Asia they delare "I'll get you yet Penelope Pitstop" with a very aggressive shake of the fist which sent Khun Paul into his Bomb Blast Bunker declaring "The falang are comming, the falang are comming"
Hope that clears it up.
