Running & Walking

There are plenty of places to run or walk around Nong Khai, the most popular being Rimkong Road, alongside the river. There is also a couple of large parks in the area, with the most popular being Nong Thin, in the Meechai area of the city (Map Ref: D2). Most locals exercise a few hours before sunset when it's cooler and more comfortable.

Swimming

Some of the larger hotels and resorts such as the Mekong Royal (Map Ref: A1), Ban Maa Resort (Map Ref: B7), and Nong Khai resort (Map Ref: E6) have decent size swimming pools but make sure you get there early to beat the crowds. Most of these pools have daily, monthly and annual rates.

In the neighbouring city of Udon Thani, there is a larger selection of hotels with pools, most of the major hotels such as Napali, Charoen, Ban Chiang and Charoensri Grand all have good quality swimming pools.

Golf

Golfers are well catered for in the Nong Khai area, there is one 18-hole and a driving range course just outside of town, and four nearer to Udon Thani which are 9 hole courses . Prices start at 120bt and a little extra for a caddy tip which you usually pay at the end of your round. Some courses have their own driving ranges, there is also a driving range in Udon Thani on a small road leading off Phosi road next door to Dutch Milk shop.

Golf Society

Udon Thani has its own ex-pat golf society which was founded by 16 ex-pats during 2002 and now has over 70 members. Society days are held each Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the golf clubs listed above, visiting golfers are welcome to join in for a round of social golf, and Tee off time is around 8.30am. Society times and dates can be seen on the notice boards of the golf clubs mentioned above. Or you can contact the chairman, Malcom Mackenzie on 042-300192 or mobile 089-5773623 for more information

Gyms

There are 3 decent Gyms in the Nong Khai area, the first (without showers and limited hours) is located on Prajak Road (Next to the Nong Khai Tessaban building) Map Ref:J4, the second is located on the 2nd floor of the large yellow building complex on Mittraphap Road Near Tesco Lotus and the Isuzu dealer (Map Ref: I4) and finally the 3rd being inside the club house for the Victory Park Golf Club (see above). Other quality gyms with all modern facilities can be found in Udon Thani at the Ban Chiang hotel where you will find a fully equipped gym with aerobics area exercise machines and weights, below is a spa with sauna. The Napali and Charoensri Grand hotels also have gyms.

Tennis courts

Tennis courts are available in Nong Khai, and there is one located next to the 7-11 on MiChai Road (Map Ref:I3.

Badminton Courts

Decent indoor badminton courts could be found on Prajak road (Map ref: L3). But on my last visit they were closed for some reason.

Ten Pin bowling

Udon Thani has 2 modern and smart 10-pin bowling alleys. The first is located at Big C Shopping centre called UFO and the second is located on the top floor of the Charoensri shopping centre called Majorplex bowling.

Pool & Snooker

Pool tables can be found at various bars around Nong Khai.

There is a few large snooker halls around town, details to follow.

Darts

The Lobo Den (Map Ref: G4) has a decent good quality darts board.

Race courses

There are 2 horse racing course in the neighbouring city of Udon Thani, the first is located on Soi Pompakai leading away from the airport on the left but is now used mainly as a training course, and the second course is located on the Udon-Sakon Nakon road, 2km's from Big C on the right (almost opposite Udon Thai House Resort)

Cinemas

There is one cinema complex in Nong Khai called the 5 Star Multiplex cinema which houses 4 modern screens, it is on the top floor of the Big Jieng shopping centre in the Tesco Lotus complex.

Shopping

Nong Khai's main shopping area is on Prajak and Meechai road starting from the centre of town at the Mittraphap Road junction and then continues south in the direction of the river. In this vicinity you'll find a wholesale clothes market, Gold shops, and various local handicraft shops.
There are also a large weekly night market, held every Sunday on Panungchonlapathan Road..
For general shopping head to the Tesco Lotus shopping centre in the Big Jieng complex. DIY enthusiasts should head to Homemart on Mittraphap Road, which is a warehouse jammed packed with everything you could possibly need for building, and has a very good range of tiles and bathroom suites but less building accessories.

Furniture shops are located all over Nong Khai but probably the place with the largest range of furniture can be found at Koncept on the Mittraphap Road towards Nong Song Hong.

National Parks

Phu Tok is the only official (and most interesting) National Park in Nong Khai, it is situated approximately 35 kilometers south east of the town of Bung Kan and nearly 200 kilometers from Nong Khai town itself. The site is a sandstone outcrop that rises, impressively, 200 metres into the sky out of the surrounding plain and so good shoes and a reasonable constitution are required in order to explore it, but the impressive views make the effort worthwhile.
More National Parks are in the vicinity of Udon, and Phu Pra bat National Park is probably the most famous and intersting park in Udon Thani province, it contains an intersting collection of pre-historic caves and cave paintings and also some very nice walks. It is located 50km's north east of Udon.
Phu phoilom is another popular park attracting visitors locally and nationally. It can be found 40km's south east of Udon. A website is currently under construction called http://www.phufoilom.com

Waterfalls

There is a nice waterfall called Sang Khom waterfall located in Sang Khom, approximately 80km's North of Nong Khai. It is most spectacular during the rain season June to Oct.

Watersports

Jommanee Beach on the Mekong River is a popular place for watersports of all kinds the only downside, is that it is usually only open from January until May, when the river recedes to a lower level. A journey further south towards Khon Kaen is Ubonrat dam and lake which is also popular for water sports and has a pretty beach in the hot season.

Aerobics

Health and fitness is becoming increasingly popular in Thailand today. Aerobics is probably one of the most poplular fitness activities and has really taken off in a big way. You can join the locals on Rimkong Road, they usually kick off at around 6pm.

Things to do in Nong Khai

There’s plenty of things for the wandering tourist to do in Nong Khai. If seeing the sights of this charming city is at the top of your list, your best options are walking and renting a bicycle. Walking gives you a peek into the simple lifestyle of the friendly locals, who are always eager to please. Meanwhile, riding a bike allows you to traverse the city from end to end Bicycle rentals cost only 30 baht for the entire day.

One of the amazing things about Nong Khai is the unique Isaan culture. The city center is alive with indigenous sights and sounds that will seemingly transport you to another world from the distant past. The neighboring towns around Nong Khai offer a unique cultural experience of their own. You can simply hop on a bus from the BKS (Bor-Kor-Sor) bus station on Prajak road for a short trip to the other towns.

Unlike Bangkok and Phuket, the major tourist destinations in Thailand, Nong Khai has none of those gleaming malls, huge clubs or go-go bars to offer. Instead, Nong Khai offers simplicity and serenity in many places where you can reflect about life in general. One such place is the grand Mekong river, where you can sit idly by and watch the boats filled with passengers and cargo travel between Thailand and Laos. It’s a good spot to finish reading that paperback that you’ve been putting off for weeks. And as you watch the endless parade of boats traveling to and from neighboring Laos, why not travel there yourself and stay for a day or two? Many tourists who have made such a journey ended up staying in Laos for weeks.

From January to May, the Mekong river subsides to its lowest level and people come out in droves to enjoy the Jomanee beach, which isn’t exactly a beach but more of a riverside. They bring mats and tents, play music and dance. Inevitably, dozens of food and drink vendors make the scene to peddle their wares. Jump in and join the festivities or just sit back and watch the breath-taking sunset.

Tourists who fancy Muay Thai boxing can explore their interest and take up some lessons in town. There’s a popular boxing stadium beside the Grand Hotel managed by Arjarn Lart, a former Muay Thai national champion, who speaks just enough English to set you up for some lessons. But if you’re expecting a cushy, air-conditioned gym surrounded by mirrors, you’ll be disappointed. This gym is the real thing, where real fighters train.

Tourists can do so many other things in Nong Khai, like fishing, mountain climbing, learning how to weave mats and the like. Discovering these things on your own is half the fun.
