Air con suggestions

PostAuthor: fussychunk » August 12, 2008, 10:05 am

Being a Brit and not having much to do with air con, and building a place in udon (or funding one) it has now come time to put air con in home. Hopefully it will just be the 2 bedrooms. can anyone give me ideas on

1 Price for air con for a ceiling insulated 3mX3m room, what do i expect to pay including fitting.

2 A decent brand or air con maker.

3 Place for her indoors to go that will not be too close to somewhere that she will get her hair done :( These bints have priorities.

4 can anyone suggest a place?

1. About 10,000 Baht.

2. Panasonic is ok.

The prices vary on brand. Most are as good as another and should offer a full 5 year Warranty. I've only bought the one, LG made in Korea, had it for 10 years with no problems until 2 months ago. Fan blade needed replacing, it'll probably go for another 10 years. The way to go now is Inverter Technology, they make half the noise as the others and save about 25% on energy costs. Inverter aircons are all they sell now in Oz.

For a 3 x 3 room with insulation, I reckon a 9000 BTU unit will be plenty. But I doubt whether you will get it for 10k, including fitting.

Some places include fitting in the price, particularly for LG. If not included, from memory it was around 2k to get done.

Panasonic, Daikin, Mitsubishi and other Japanese brands are probably the best (even if made in Thailand). Next level is LG and Chinese brands, and then the rest.

Fussy, for a room 3m x 3m a 9000 Btu unit will suffice.

For a room 4m x 4m up 12000 Btu is preferable.

Best make Daikin - about 17900 Baht.

Otherwise Panasonic, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Sharp, Carrier, etc are all good.

Most decent shops will include installation, unless the pipework has to go more than 3m.

I had, just sold house, but 1 sharp, 7 + yrs old, runs fine. remote just crapped out, could of been fixed for 100 baht, but I procrastinated, and left batteries in that crapped out, so corroded terminals, in process of tracking down replacement remote. also 3 Mitsubishis, all performing good, 2 are 5 yr old, one maybe 3-4 yrs old. all run and perform as expected. 13/16/18/24 K BTU's

13k btu should be enough for that room, as present landlord put one in place now and room a bigger than 3 x3 and handles it well. 16 in old house does 4 x 4 well, 18 is used in 8 x 4 room. all cool the room off, and if wanting to use blanket, will chill it nicely. the other 2, the 24 does the same as those 2, and the 13 is in the adjacent room, with open wall spaces to walk thru and old window that were taken out, making an very open area. those 2 cool those 2 rooms down fine. they get sun most of the day. total of 8 x 12 and 2 x 10 maybe, but never uncomfortable. will maintain 27 degrees with no problems. when phase 3 electric comes, shortly, there performance will be better, though not needed if just running 2 at a time. which is all that is necessary for that house.

pricing, I thought they were expensive, but old pricing, not helpful now, plus I forget. if I get a chance I

yes it is, stopped in, they had one sharp remote, a bit different, but will not refund if not operational. may just buy it, 500 or 600 baht, as having trouble tracking down one. the 3 mits, 2 remotes work all, the one does not, so hoping sharp is going to be a bit more generic. can turn unit on and off, but bit of hassle to lift cover everytime to use, especially since bedroom unit and remote is needed. one shop here needs the s/n and remote number and can match up, maybe, see next couple days, but pricing may be bit high. 5-600 baht roll of dice is sounding good

There are a couple of electrical shops near AEK that also carry replacement remotes. I'll be going up that way tomorrow and I'll note the location and PM you.

Tesco also sells a generic A/C remote. I had a look the other day, and it seemed to cover all well known A/C brands. Can't remember the price.

In the middle of the aisle as you turn right out of electrical goods - heading towards the bikes and bread.

Rito, was there yesterday, as they were closing, will return tomorrow, need s/n and remote number, seem to be able to order, impression ree got if they don't have.

lotus sounds good too, didn't know they had them. plus, i think if not compatible, the will refund or credit. that's a good option. sounds cheaper.

thanks to all.

thanks Jackspratt, tesco's worked fine, and much cheaper than big c one w/no option of refund. 300/500 or 600. didn't not have the timer options, but never used in that room anyway, which assume will be used as guest room for new owners. thanks again all.

curious, it is a universal, with many manufacturers and each having different number of versions. sharp had 5 different to choice from, code numbers, 57-63, 7 choices, 3 operating, only 1 all features (swing arm). so a good one to pick, if not needing timer option. and refundable in 7 days w/reciept if not compatible.

If you are driving on the Ring Road heading from Global toward BiG, there is a large building on the left. I have dealt with them a couple of times--even getting same day installation. the company name is Standard Cooling ---there is a large Mitsubishi sign on the building. They supply several brands and also do repairs and installations.
