Air Conditioner Cleaning & Your Health

Came off the end of Songkran with a rather bad head cold and then the inevitable coughing period? Well,
this just kept lingering-on also with sneezing fits in the morning and I eventually began eyeing the Air-Con
unit at the apt. with some suspicion? Sure enough, opened the bonnet (that's hood for you yanks) this
morning to see the filter absolutely caked with filth. It's not an old apartment either this service had simply
never been done before and it needs to be done every couple of months? Anyway, my unit is mounted high
on the wall with the compressor outside(as most modern ones seem to be) and the filter is just a fine screen
taking it to the bathroom I was aghast and the clumps of junk falling off it as I ran the shower head over the
thing to clean it. Yuck, no wonder I felt lousy with these airborne pathogens blowing over me while I slept. This
isn't the 1st time either. I see service guys performing this job all the time but at some hotels and apartments,
it's forgotten until the unit literally stops working. If there are any HVAC guys out there I would be interested in
more thourough service recommendations. I myself am begining to think regular fans are a much better idea.

I check and clean my AC filters every couple of months, depending how much I use them. After washing off the dust I put the filter out in the sun for an hour or so, to dry it and avoid any mildew etc. I was advised to do that by an AC Engineer. ;)

Also, if you tend to be allergic to dust etc clean your fans and ceiling fans.

I do not want to get away from A/C but they do sell air purifiers if you have allergy problems
as for cleaning A/C filters Arjay just gave you the best recommendation keep them clean & dry

I clean the filters every couple of months, every six months I use a Japanese branded cleaning spray availble in Tesco's and Big C. Use it in December January when you don't need the A/C on as it's recommended you leave the spray in for 24 hours, then run the system again.
Once a year a full service, everything taken apart and checked.
