Allegations of corruption at Nong Khai Immigration

PostAuthor: valentine » October 1, 2005, 5:14 pm

Following the visit of the Chief of immigration from Bangkok to Nong Khai.An investigation into allegations of corruption between several officers and certain farangs has resulted in the transfer for 2 months of the local chief and four others to Bangkok for retraining.
More serious measures were avoided because of the general consensus that most people thought the office was well run and this was taken into consideration. The transfers take effect from today, 1st october.
Taken from a report in todays Daily News which named the officers involved which I haven't disclosed.

Whether the allegations are true or not the one thing that you can be sure of is that the 'Letter of the Law' will now be followed rather than the 'spirit', which will really not benefit anybody.

Like you Ray, I have never been asked to contribute anything to the coffers, but my transactions have all been normal legit requests and as Paul rightly said, why pay for someone to do their job. Is it possible that some regulations needed bypassing? Therefore requiring favours?
Purely speculation on my part.
No mention was made of the people donating the "gifts"

The allegations have always been to do with border crossings and not visa extentions.Nong Khai let Hambali come and go as he pleased.I don't know of any "small fish" who have ever received anything they should not.In fact two farangs here were refused one year extentions.

Bob,they are both in their forties and applied for a one year, supporting a Thai wife extention.Bangkok said no.The guys at Nong Khai said it was because they had no children with their Thai wives. My wife has her own businesses and we have severall children.Who really knows what happens when the application lands on someones desk in Bangkok. What if the guy is having a bad day?

Thanks Marcus. Did the two guys then just stay on 30 day tourist visas, or have they had to leave the country completely??

They go to Laos and get a three month non imm "o" visa which they then extend for two months at Nong Khai immigration. Then back to Laos to start again.
