Actually that Wikipedia article on Echidna is from ancient Greek mythology, about 700 BC, nothing to do with the Bible. i was going to suggest Boric Acid for the ant problem, I used it in the States and it killed off the whole colony. However with the proliferation of ants around here that would probably be like emptying the ocean with a thimble. So the previous suggestions of deterrance schemes probably would work best.

When you go to the loo and drop your shorts, make sure there are no ants on the floor that can get into your shorts. Found out the painful way today.

jimbo boric acid is very good insect killer or repellent since they do not want to walk in it burns there feet
so it could be a useful remedy here. the only problem I see is were can you buy it and how expensive will it be. some times the cost out weights the problem

If you can put the plastic containers into the fridge. ;)

In the past we've put table legs into small bowls within larger bowls of water.

The best results we've had locally/recently have been with the tiny pellets that you put into a plastic tray and leave near their runs. They carry those back to their nests where it wipes out the colony. :D

The chalk sticks do kill them, but only if they cross the line and only for a few day, or if it's outside until it rains. :|

The boric acid (powder) is excellent for all types of insects but it needs to go in an area that stays dry and is not accessable by pets or children. It is deadly to humans. Great for applying around the inside of foundation walls in crawl spaces.

I tried many things with mixed results. The final solution was recommended in this board: Chandrite spray, available everywhere. Killing them forever.
