AVG Antivirus

PostAuthor: patriot » September 14, 2008, 7:17 am

Like another poster I know precious little about computers.
I have AVG version 8
However, 3 days ago I started getting a message on the Overview page "You may not be protected; some components report an error".
Couldn't fix it so I uninstalled AVG and then reinstalled off the net.
Now I get messages saying that the Antivirus and ANtispyware databases are outdated and I cant access for updates.
Has anyone any ideas!!
Thanks

OK, at the the computer screen (right hand side) you should have a AGV icon. It is 4 coloured squares yellow, blue, green & red, but it will probably have a red i in the middle of it. Double mouse click on this icon (or right hand mouse click then open AGV user interface).
The AGV panel will open & will probably show an error message under the "Update Manager".
Make sure that you are connected to the internet & then double mouse click (or right mouse click then Open) on the Update Manager.
AGV will open the screen below.

Click on Update now & AGV will search for the latest file. After a few seconds a "pop up" should appear & say that a new update is available & do you want to download it. Say Yes & it should start downloading & then installing the latest file - this does take a few minutes.
After a pop up will appear saying all is updated.
You can also adjust the time when AGV tries to update itself on the above update screen as well.
Hope that helps..

Don't know how to copy mine but it shows 8.0.138 In the statistic it shows last updated today but still Anti-Virus and Anti_ spyware are telling me I am not protected, need updating. Talked to Pops about this and he suggested I download updates to folder and open from there, but I don't know how to do that.
Maybe better if I remove it and download again?

Trubrit here is their web address for downloads

http://free.avg.com/ww.download-update

I think you need AVI: 270.6.21 and IAVI: / 1670 for the latest virus database. If you download it there it asks where you want to save the file to, so you can do as Pops suggests.

Bob,
On clicking "Update Now" I get the usual Sygate Firewall stating that "..trying to connect using remote port 80 etc"
On clicking "Yes" it does not let me access and therefore the update is cancelled.

Is there anyone out there who provides a "clean up" service for PCs, and thus could point me in the right direction because I am pretty useless when it comes to computer science!!

Cheers

I think that might be the root cause of your problem then patriot - your firewall. I am not familiar with Sygate Firewall but most firewalls allow you to add programs & sites that you consider safe & then is not protective/cautious with these sites.
You either need to add the program name for AGV (agvupd.exe) or the AGV site (http://free.avg.com) to the exceptions tab of your firewall - it is possible the tab is called something other than "exceptions" but it will be pretty obvious to you.

Yep; I removed the firewall and all is back to normal .... Thanks.

I find it strange that it should have happened recently; perhaps I accidentally "Yes"ed a Sygate update that screwed things up.
