A week old Bangkok Post? Well, news you can use! :lol:

Read lots of posts by LA extolling the virtues of the Baileys nectar and saw it on the shelves at Carrefours. Wondered what it was and the label says it's a cream Irish whiskey? 900 baht range, I think, but might be tempted to try it sometime.

Not a connoisseur of fine wines but saw a good collection of reds and whites at C-4s that baffles me. I like a good white wine in the "cheap" to moderate range. Can anybody recommend one?

A special note to those that love a white bait as starters, its available at 50bht a kid(100grams) and served with a splash of lemon on a bed of lettuce it really starts a meal on a high note.

OK, I'll bite Val. ;) What is "white bait"?

Baileys' is best bought at duty free in Laos PH - nearly half price to Thailand.... :D
Warning though, it is a VERY deceptive drink. It goes down very smoothly, like drinking cream but it does have a fair bit of alcohol in it....
Recommending wines is a bit like recommending bars in Udon - more about individual taste than anything else.
This site discusses the different types of white available so may give you an idea about what to try...

Jingjai,
Whitebait are very small fish, (about half an inch long I guess) that are cooked & eaten whole - bit like fish tasting crisps.... :D

The young of a silvery fish, normally herrings or sprats which are fried and eaten whole. Served in many UK restaurants on a bed of lettuce along with a slice of lemon and toast fingers as a starter before the main course.
Don't you have them in the states then Marc?
Forgot to add. Goes particularly well with a nice bottle of Chardonnay or Alsace wine.

Whitebait deeeeep Crispy fried....fresh lemon squeezed over them, and a garlic dipping sauce if you liked....GREAT.

A choice on Tapas Menus or Italian Rests (among other style of restuarants)

Baileys....Over Ice....Creamy Taste with a kick of Irish Whiskey, mine is half a tumbler full over several cubes of Ice...just perfect, and goes with a nice cigar....A Baileys in Your Coffee goes well.... ;)

Caramel + Mint Flavour available in Thailand/Lao..?

Bloody hell. How the other half live! All i get is sticky rice, something which has flown through the window and a liquid to drink, which can also fuel the mechanical buffalo. :( :^o

Nice contrast in the two pictures. While BM shows the fried version as normally served in England,France and Italy. The one from Farang shows them uncooked as served from little street stalls in Holland. They are sometimes pickled. I was told by the stall holder you put them in your mouth head first then swallow whole, or else they may stick in your throat. Can't say I like them like that as they don't tickle the taste buds before entering the stomach. :lol:

Thanks for the wine link, BobH. California Chenin Blanc sounds what I'm looking for, something you can slobber down while eating fish. =P~

Whitebait look a lot like smelt that I used to catch during springtime in Michigan lakes and rivers. Sometimes the smelt runs would be so thick that you could fill 5 gallon buckets within minutes. Easy to clean. Just use scissors to snip off the heads, cut with scissors from the pee-hole on up, use your fingers to swipe away the guts and ready to deepfry. Delicious. Looks a lot like BM's photo above on the plate. =P~

You are welcome PH - I am a bit more of a red wine fan myself, but cold white wine is a refreshing drink in a climate like Thailand especially if having with fish.
On the whitebait front - they are usually cooked whole in UK (head attached & eaten too) without gutting, but they are small - the pictures above make them look a little larger than they are.

They look quite tasty. I'll have to give them a try.

Every so often my wife buys a bag of those crispy fried minnows they sell at the Thai style markets, but they don't look like BM's photo. Sometimes some of them are so hard, I'm afraid I'm gonna break one of my teeth trying to chew them up.
