I'm not doubting you on this, but please tell me which day that baht bus passed every 10 minutes.

Ten minutes may be their goal, but I've never seen it happen. I see a tuk-tuk every 10 minutes on Nong Samrong Road, but I've never paid less than 100 baht one way for a trip into the city.
I've waited so long for baht buses (up to a half hour) on Nong Samrong Road that I've ended up walking all the way to the Ring Road, which is quite a jaunt and would kill most overweight farangs. Once, a guy on a motrobike gave me a ride to the Ring Road for 20 baht.
There is a market about halfway on Nong Samrong and sometimes you can get lucky and find a ride there.
Whatever one does while living off of the Nong Samrong Road, they should have their own transportation or have lots of baht to pay for the rides and lots of time to wait.
My personal decision has been to pay more for accommodations and stay in town within walking distance of everything.
