Thailand's government on Wednesday approved an excise tax increase on beer and other alcoholic drinks to 9 percent from 7 percent in a bid to boost government revenue amid global economic slowdown.

Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij said the increase of excise taxes on liquor, beer and brandy will be effective from Thursday onwards. The measure is expected to boost the government's income by 6.3 billion baht ($179 million), which will be used for investment in infrastructure projects.

The government also approved a budget worth 1.43 trillion baht ($41 billion) for investments in infrastructure projects for the next three years in a bid to stimulate the sluggish economy, Korn said.

Korn said the government plans to revise the excise tax structure further, which may include an increase in taxes on fuel and cigarettes.

Permanent secretary of Finance Ministry Suparat Kawatkul said tax revenues collected by the government during the last quarter of 2008 and the first quarter of 2009 fell by an estimate of 9 percent. Excise tax collection fell more than 20 percent on-year during the period due to lower consumer spending.

The Bank of Thailand last month forecast gross domestic product may shrink as much as 3.5 percent this year and said it may have to reduce the forecast further if domestic political turmoil exacerbates.

Domestic political uncertainties and falling exports amid global slumps have hurt investment, consumer spending and tourism in Southeast Asia's second-largest economy.

There was another tax rise earlier this year - at my sis-in-law's shop, cold Leos then went up to 45 baht.

But I still get 3 for 120 :D :D :D

Running a garage as yet no increase but do watch the cost per litre, I am having to pay the tax rise back to the revenue dept from the last tax hike, by buying smaller quantities of fuel I can adjust my price up or down depending on the price I pay, many garages in Udon are making approx 4-4.5 baht a litre at the mo benzine went down 1100 baht per 3000 litres two day ago.
Cheaper prices normally means Gasahol or bio diesel, Thais are quite clever of not showing the correct fuel they are selling and many peopl have spoken to me about this.
91 is about 29.50 - 31.30 per litre or thereabouts
Diesel about 23-24 a litre
That is for 100% 911 and Diesel.............the bio/gasahol stuff is cheaper but may harm your engines so take care.....use of these amy cost you more than you save in the long term, in replacement engine parts etc: so please be wrned and check check your garage when you fill up you are getting the RIGHT FUEL.....Just for info.

prices are not guarranteed, but the bigger garages I have found are noit quite so flexible in their pricing regime.

Maybe i should bring a case full of homebrew kits next visit? Reminds me of the old student days; when the booze gets low brew another barrel, throw a party and spend the next month drinking all the spare bottles left by the guests.

That would be illegal, as is making wine . The jail term can be up to 5 years. The police recently raided a village near here where the farmers were making Sato, a white sweet liquid made from sticky rice, which is normally stored in coke bottles. and is very potent. They were fined 10k.

Well, you learn something every day. Another fine mess that udonmap has prevented. Never knew it was illegal. Or is it only if you try to sell it (like UK)?
