Best way to extend 30 day tourist visa?

PostAuthor: charlie » February 23, 2008, 9:23 pm

I arrived Thailand on 20th December, stayed until 26th when I went to Laos and returned on 28th. I then left Thailand on 21st Jan and went to Maldives until I returned again on 4th Feb.
I decided to have some dental work done in Udon which will now not be completed until around 12th March, leaving me with an overstay of 8 days.
My question is, what would be the easiest way of getting another 10 days/ 2 weeks here?
As I am staying near Nong Khai, would going to the Nong Khai Immigration Ofice be the best way? and what would they want me to produce?
I dont really fancy another trip to Laos right now, but I assume that would be the other option?

I may be corrected (and often am) but I do not think that there is any way of extending a Visa On Arrival (which is what you have). Plus you are only allowed 90 days in Thailand within 180 calendar days on this type of visa. I am not willing to do the maths for you, but I think you have two options, both of which involve going to Laos.
One, if the extra 10/14 days you need does not put you over the 90 in 180 then just go to duty free in Laos & come back & you will be given another VOA for a maximum of 30 days (less if it conflicts with the 90/180 rule when you will be given the number of days remaining on this rule).
If the extra days would break the 90/180 rule then you will need to go to Vientiane to the Thai Embassy & get a 60 day tourist visa (Yes I know this is far more than you want but there isn't a lower option). This will mean spending a minimum of two days in Laos, but if you search the forum then you will get a GREAT amount of detail on how to do this..

Good luck.. :D

Agree with Bob, however you haven't exceed the 90 day rule. I believe your best bet is to make the border run and obtain a 30 day stamp (Tourist Visa Exemption) the Visa on Arrival (VOA) is an entirely different animal.

I would also suggest having documentation or note from the Dr just in case.

Visitors who enter the Kingdom with Visa on Arrival generally cannot file an application for extension of stay except in special cases such as illness which prevents them from travelling, etc.

The above is for the VOA, I don't know if it would apply to the Visa Exempt, but may be worth a try if you don't want to make the trip.

The day before your 30 day entry stamp expires go to Nong Khai Imm with documentation from your Dr providing a reason for a 2 week extension. All they can say is no (and maybe have a good laugh :D). If that fails then make a border run.

Papa at first I thought that was a great idea & was waiting to see what the result would be. But now I am NOT sure it is a good idea. I have just looked at the Hull Consulate website. There they do mention obtaining visa for medical purposes, but they are

Now I know that might sound academic as you need to be in your home country to apply, but underneath it says...

Which doesn't sound very good...

Thanks for the advice.
I was also here in August so I am close to the 90/180 rule.
I will have make the trip to Laos as the timing is not good and take the 10 or so days left under that rule. Are they strict on this? Do they actually check the entry/exit visas for time stayed?
Can I go and come back in the same day?
However even they take into account the days I have left, I will still have enough to complete the treatment.
However I assume that I will need to apply for a visa so as I can return again in April for further treatment (and see the GF of course!!)

I am told that they were VERY strict on counting the days, but that was just after the law was started to be enforced, but i would think it would be safe to think that they still are... :(
You can certainly go & come back in the same day (in about an hour if you don't want to visit duty free & there are small queues at Laos immigration).
I am not sure where you are from, as you say England/Holland, but applying for a visa if you are in the UK is just about the easiest thing to do, just is not free.... :D
See this site

Hull consulate

And it can all be done by post....

If all else fails you could overstay the 8 days and will be fined 500baht per day, so 4000baht when you go through immigration at Bangkok.
I have never heard of this having any effect on future visits as long as you pay the fine there and then.
Maybe not the best option but its there should you need it.

I'm fairly certain, a note from the Dr./dentist (plus the fee) will get you an extension.
At least it did for me a few years back.

Thanks for all your advice.
I did the run to Laos yesterday morning. I left home at 6.00am and was back enjoying a nice beerlao by 10.30!
Interestingly, immigration did not even bother looking at dates, he just stamped another 30 days into my passport.

I've read somewhere, maybe Thaivisa, that Nong Khai check point is not as strict as other check points. Oh well, good to hear it worked out for you.
