"BEIJING (AFP) - Used condoms are being recycled into hair bands in southern China threatening to spread sexually-transmittable diseases they were originally meant to prevent, state media reported Tuesday

In the latest example of potentially harmful Chinese-made products, rubber hair bands have been found in local markets and beauty salons in Dongguan and Guangzhou cities in southern Guangdong province, China Daily newspaper said.

'These cheap and colourful rubber bands and hair ties sell well ... threatening the health of local people,' it said.
Despite being recycled, the hair bands could still contain bacteria and viruses, it said.

'People could be infected with AIDS, (genital) warts or other diseases if they hold the rubber bands or strings in their mouths while waving their hair into plaits or buns,' the paper quoted a local dermatologist who gave only his surname, Dong, as saying. A bag of ten of the recycled bands sells for just 25 sen (three cents), much cheaper than others on the market, accounting for their popularity, the paper said.

A government official was quoted as saying recycling condoms was illegal.

In response, it launched a public relations blitz this summer aimed at playing up efforts to strengthen monitoring systems."

Typical of the Chinese way of thinking they just don't care  I find them a dirty race of people who are so used to living in close confines that proper hygiene does not exist... Yuk

I agree while it is disgusting, the claim that someone could contract HIV from them is ridiculous.
The virus dies within minutes when exposed to the atmosphere, if not seconds.
So unless the manufacturer is getting his male employees to ejaculate into condoms, quickly sealing them, making them into hairbands, selling them immediately, then the buyer straight away manages to break the condom by having a good chew on it, releasing the virus into their gums which just happen to be bleeding then I am guessing the risk from HIV is somewhat small!

It would seem the the Chinese will stop at nothing in order to make a quick buck, and their business ethics and 'inhuman' rights are deplorable.

Personally I always try to steer clear of Chinese made products, but I guess that's very difficult in a place like Thailand.

Yep a wind up BM, the story actually states that,if it happened at all, the condoms where a faulty batch that did not meet quality standards and the used bit seems to have been added just to make a better story.

Also would the cost of a simple rubber band really be more expensive than a banned rubber

I have to wonder what people would do with hair bands that would enable them to catch STDs from them, even if they were these filthy things.

IMHO, these hair bands are not dangerous, only disgusting.
