Broadband future in UK

PostAuthor: BobHelm » March 6, 2009, 10:20 am

Interesting little piece from BBC concerning the alternatives for broadband expansion (increase in speed) in the UK.

Although maybe not too relevant for Thailand, it is interesting what it says about WIMAX and it's future use in developing countries as a relatively low cost method of delivering high speed (up to 70 Mbps) and the possibility of gaining access to it over 50Kms away.

On a further plus it looks like BT have been given the approval to invest in a fibre optics network

I recall when they were putting in fibre optics in Arizona that was in 1995 (Kingman area)
I understand we have it here in BKK or is it in Patts

Interesting that they don't give timescales for full fibre service.
They might get fibre to the street cabinets but getting it to the customer is another thing.
The local network is still very dependent on the old fault prone aluminum and copper cables that still exist, a fair proportion of which are directly buried in the ground, it will cost a small fortune and take years to replace the existing infrastructure.
At least it looks like BT are at being allowed to compete competitively against the other providers, but don't hold your breath for full fibre working, especially if you live in a rural area.

People on virgin/NTL can now get upto 50mb in the UK it is slowly getting up there, me I am on good old copper wire can just about get 6.8mb. In the village in Udon we can just get 2mb, except at tea time were that falls to 56kb if we are lucky so the webcam is out of question. I do hope 1 day that high speed internet gets to the village, and to the old copper wires of the UK.
