Carling Cup

PostAuthor: Zidane » November 13, 2008, 9:09 am

OK,not the most important competition but the final is at Wembley and the winners are guaranteed a UEFA Cup spot.Last years final between Spurs and Chelsea was an excellent match.
Two results last night stand out........Burnley beat Chelsea on penalties at Stamford Bridge and Spurs repeated their recent Premier League triumph over Liverpool winning 4-2 this time.
In the other match last night Blackburn won at Sunderland 2-1.
I only thought about doing a post on this competition last night after I watched a re-run of Arsenals win over Wigan 3-0 on Thai Cable TV.Arsenal only had Hoyte,Djourou and Song with any real first team experience. The rest were all kids, some as young as 16 and 17,but they played some wonderful football which was a pleasure to watch.
One thing you have to say about Arsenal and Wenger is they certainly have an eye for young footballing talent.Far more so than Chelsea,Liverpool and United.
Also through to the Quarter Finals are Man United,Stoke,Derby and Watford.

Perhaps there was some truth in that old terrace chant ........

with a packet of sweets and a cheesy smile
Arsne Wenger is a p****phile.

He has the 'magic touch' when it comes to getting the young boys playing

It's about time my lot learnt how to take a penalty.

Have not seen the Arsenal game, but read that the youngsters played very well.

They had to play well coz anyone who doesn't "keep his end up" has to go and see Mr Wenger for a one to one.

Bob,
I was quite surprised as there was a fair number of English lads in the team.I only switched on the re-run of the match by accident and was amazed by the standard.OK Wigan arent top notch opposition but this was a team of kids !
Pick of the bunch was a lad called Wilshere in midfield aged just 16.The left back,Gibbs, only 17 and the striker Simpson, who scored two goals, only 19 I think. Two other English teenagers were Randall and Hansbury who played well.
With Englands so called "golden generation" ageing a bit now its nice to know that we have these up and coming youngsters to call on after the World Cup in South Africa in 2010.
Its just a shame that United dont seem to have a similar crop coming through.
Hopefully, our "ageing teenager" Rooney can grab at hat trick on Saturday ! ;)

Jack Wilshere is getting some rave reviews. Only 16 but it would appear a prodigious talent. I bet Cappello is watching him closely. He will break into Arsenal's premiership first 11 this season and I bet he is already pencilled into the England squad for 2010.

Check out Vela's chip for the 4th goal! Then Wilshere.

It's good to hear about the talented English youth. I hope they will be good enough to force their way into the top team. I believe there are 6 Frenchmen in the top team. Got nothing against the French, it's just a lot of players from one country in one team. Anyway, it's good to see English youth getting their chance in the top league.

Carling Cup

PostAuthor: Zidane » December 4, 2008, 10:43 am

The line up for the semi finals is now complete.
Arsenals youngsters good run came to an end when they were beaten by Burnley 2-0 at Turf Moor.
Stoke City went down to a 94th minute penalty against Championship side Derby County 1-0.
Last night in the all Premiership tie Man Utd beat struggling Blackburn 5-3 with Carlos Tevez scoring four times.
Holders Spurs came from behind to beat Watford 2-1 away at Vicarage Road.

Shame about Arsenals kids getting knocked out as they play some lovely football but I suppose its nice for teams like Burnley and Derby to have a chance of success for the first time in a long while.

Manchester United reached the final of the Carling Cup last night with a 4-2 victory over Derby County giving them a 4-3 aggregate win.
Their most likely opponents are the current holders Spurs who hold a 4-1 first leg lead over Burnley.
Spurs are also Uniteds opponents in the FA Cup this weekend.......some tasty games including Liverpool v Everton,Cardiff v Arsenal and Derby v Nottingham Forest.
But doesnt look like the FA Cup will be shown in Thailand  .....unless anyone knows different ?
