Chiang Kahn (Immigration Office ?)

PostAuthor: lucky55 » April 18, 2009, 10:56 am

:-k
Finally got back to stay I hope!,but I've just found out I now have to use the Imm. Office at Chiang Khan because my address is in Nongbualampoo.
I have to go next week but I will be leaving from Udonthani.
Any information would be very much appreciated, regarding the following:-

Best way to get there from U.T. ?
Do any Udonmap members use that office ?
Where is it in Chiang Khan?
Are they Farang friendly ? etc.etc.....

I have heard there is a scenic route following the Mekong from Nongkai to Chiang Khan...anybody done it ?...if so,how far going that way...how long (approx.)

The T.W. is lost out of her village so can't help with this.....but to anybody who can,I thank you very much in anticipation.

Best wishes to all !

i've driven both ways a couple times and different seasons wet/dry. roads are decent on both routes, approx 200 kms via NBLP/Loei, approx 240 ish the river route. both nice, non river is faster, bit shorter but faster road. river view is very nice, especially dry season, as the vegetation along road will be almost non existent and nice view of river. depending on how much rain already, view may be marginal. but still a very nice drive. would strongely recommend overnighting in khiang khan day before. not something i would want to do in one day.

loog mai gh is nice place to stay, 400-500 baht range, very nice room on river, but shared bath, tho nice, and will probably the only one staying there.

if going NBLP/Loei route, simply follow the signs, then in loei, you will see signs for chiang khan, hard to get lost. hwy 210/201/211

if going river route, the usual route to nong khai, then a couple options. but go to river, under thai/laos bridge and follow signs to tha bo, sri chiang mai, pak chong, then should start to see signs for chiang khan. nong khia, hwy 211, which there are a couple versions of. 1st one will bypass NK, and comes out near tha bo, then along the river. other is the way to NK immigrations, or thru NK, to river and under bridge, and pick it up there. there are a couple stops along the river route if not watted out yet, and if starting early, can make a nice day out of it, get to CK for late lunch, 2 ish.

will follow up with location of imm if i can find on map, and decent lunch spot on river area just before CK. not a lot of food options in CK, a few.

I didn't know there was an immigration office there

it's there, actually 2 of them, on tha li or something, but only good for that district. along the river down by the park (south) is the marine station, so thinking got to be near that. besides that, i haven't got a clue. and agree, food, poor selections. it's trying to be a backpacker town, so if you like banana pancakes, bring your own maple syrup, unless you like a dribble of honey on yours

stay clear of mekong gh, they have a annoying bug problem. checked in then out w/half refund on threat of negative report to LP, like i didn't do it anyway. cheap, didn't notice anything, out, then return to sleep, and within minutes, room filling with little black flying bugs. too many, went to check out, told they will leave in about an hour, yea right, then noticed they were everywhere downstairs in the common areas............stay clear. [-X [-X

will have to ask little lady about munch place, on tributary to river, where meet. they do bbq fish/chic w/som tam, sticky rice.......the usual, well known area w/locals and high turn over of food at dining time, so all fresh. think less than 20 kms west/south of CK. there is a decent korean bbq, but way to hot to sit around oven and eat now. was a nice place, just before intersection of 211/201 to loei, did nice kababs/skewers of whatever, and ice cream =D> =D>

been while since i overnighted.
