Date of visa extension

PostAuthor: Ray.Charles » April 20, 2009, 8:35 am

I read that many folks get their extension weeks in advance.
When your visa is extended for another year, does that year start from the date when your visa is extended or does it start when the existing visa expires?

It continues on from the date your visa was due to expire. So yes you could have a visa expiry date of more than 1 year in your passport. :D

Is there a limit?
I'd guess more usually up to about 13 months.

What is the current record?
Pass.

Last year I renewed my visa early - about mid August (in Phuket where I was then living), because I was about to return to the Uk for my daughter's wedding. The visa wasn't due to expire 5th September 2008, so about 3 weeks early. (I also got a re-entry permit).

I returned to Thailand on 31st August, moved up to Issan and went to Nong Khai Immigration a few days later to obtain a letter to enable me to buy a m/bike up here. So on or about the 3rd September 2008, I presented my passport to the legendary Mr Happy at NK Immigration, showing my already renewed visa, with an expiry date of 5th September 2009. :D :D

Mr Happy turned my passport inside out and quizzed me intently on why I renewed my visa in Phuket, when I had come back to Thailand, where I now lived, and why I had moved etc. However, I had done everything correctly and with genuine reasons, so there was nothing he could take issue with. :D :D

I renewed my retirement visa that was due to expire Jan. 30 2009 on Dec. 16 2008. At that time I also got a multiple entry and was a bit surprised to see the Jan. 30 2010 exp date, same as my new visa;o)

well, as always, seems to the agents discretion, way back when, when i switched from married -o-, with 90 day exit/ent, to a retirement visa, was told to do withing 30 days of present visa expiring. i even made a lao run, and got another 90 days just before expiration, thinking in case there was a problem, i had 90 days to sort it. got to immigrations with new 90 day stamp, told to come back in 60, hmm, waste of a lao visa, but restocked a bit. then when imm office in udon/aek, mere 15 mins and my retirement was approved. 8)
