Dining in Nong Khai

If you want to dine like the natives, then grab a seat at one of dozens of restaurants at the riverside road known as Rimkhong at the eastern side of Nong Khai. The food is cheap and, surprisingly, tastes better than the food served by similar cheap restaurants in the city center. If you don’t mind standing while you eat, there’s also a lot of tasty but cheap food available from Prajak road’s food vendors.

Bear in mind that these places only serve food at night. If you’re looking to try cheap Thai food during the day, the small establishments on Thasadej market are your best bet.

On the other hand, if you have exquisite taste and would like a fine dining atmosphere to match, these are the best restaurants in Nong Khai, as recommended by the Thailand Tourism Authority. Unfortunately, except for Pantawee Restaurant, there is not much info available online for the others on this list.

1. Pantawee Restaurant

This is probably the best authentic Thai restaurant in the city, and it's located inside the Pantawee Hotel. They also serve excellent European cuisine. The restaurant offers a wide selection of drinks and beer and boasts of having "the coldest beer in town." You can enjoy your brew at the air-conditioned restaurant or at the open-air courtyard. Their address is 1164 Pantawee Hotel 1049 Haisoke Road, Amphur Muang, Nong Khai, with telephone no. 0-4241-1568. In addition, Pantawee also has a Web site (http://www.pantawee.com) and e-mail (pantawee@pantawee.com).

Ruan Thai Coffee & Breakfast, Rim Kong road (near Surreal). Run by a very pleasant young Thai woman who does her best to speak English. The prices are a little high, but the food is excellent and the restaurant itself is also quite nice.

Surreal, Rim Kong Rd (near the Thasadej market). A must-stop for many passing through. An old abandoned wooden house converted into a lounge-bar. Surreal bar & restaurant has a nice view of the Mekong, fruit shakes, music and cocktails. The pool table is free to use for customers. You can also buy, trade and sell second-hand books there.

Dee Dee and Thai Thai on Prajak road, the main street in Nong Khai, are two Chinese-style diners right next to one another that serve good Thai and Chinese food. They are open later than most other restaurants.

Daeng Naem Nueang, along the Mekong on Rim Kong road slightly downstream from Surreal and just upstream from the Tha sadej market, is a Vietnamese restaurant widely acclaimed among Thai and Vietnamese residents of Nong Khai. The staff are friendly, but not all proficient in English, so bringing a Thai friend would help a lot. They also offer pre-made take-away packages of 'naem neuang' (a delicious Vietnamese dish) if you want to eat at home instead.

Im Im Dim Sum Serving dim sum, noodle, fried snacks, coffee and tea. Located in downtown Nong Khai, Soi Sook Pracha near the PP Sport Centre.
