Red Bull may boost heart disease risk

Matthew Clayfield | August 15, 2008

DRINKING just one can of the popular Red Bull energy drink may be enough to increase dramatically the risk of developing life-threatening blood clots, even in healthy young people.

Despite the drinks' promotional promise to give its customers "wings", Australian researchers who studied the caffeine-laden beverage say it may also increase the risk of symptoms commonly associated with heart disease.

Scott Willoughby, from the Cardiovascular Research Centre at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, said the study showed "that normal people develop symptoms normally associated with cardiovascular disease" after drinking Red Bull.

The results were such that he would not drink Red Bull himself, he said.

Dr Willoughby tested the cardiovascular systems of 30 young adults - Red Bull's target demographic - one hour before and one hour after consuming one 250ml can of sugar-free Red Bull.

He said the results were striking: "One hour after they drank Red Bull, (their cardiovascular systems) were no longer normal. They were abnormal like we would expect in a patient with cardiovascular disease."

Particular attention was paid to the various factors that result in the formation of blood clots, Dr Willoughby said, including stickiness of the blood and the proper functioning of the patient's blood vessels.

"If you get an increase in stickiness and a decreased ability of the blood vessels to stop its stickiness, that adds up to a bad situation," he said.

"If you add in other risk factors for cardiovascular disease - stress or high blood pressure - this could be potentially deadly."

He said these and other factors, such as the effects of Red Bull when mixed with alcohol, would be the subject of further studies.

While Red Bull is already banned in countries such as Norway and Denmark, Dr Willoughby said there would have to be further research before it could be banned in Australia.

"The can currently comes with a warning of its own," he said. "But if you have any predisposition to cardiovascular disease, I'd think twice about drinking it."

Red Bull Australia spokeswoman Linda Rychter said she had spoken to Dr Willoughby and had asked to be sent a copy of the paper and could not comment on its findings until they had been assessed by the head office in Austria.

Red Bull is particularly popular among university students, who often drink numerous cans of the beverage at exam time or when studying. It was a group of Dr Willoughby's undergraduate students who originally came up with the idea for the study.

I love these research projects.

Note how it says Red Bull may cause heart disease. Where's the evidence?

Have we got scores of University students dead from drinking RB?

Are there night clubbers dead from drinking too much Vodka RB after a heavy night out?

There is no evidence, only body anomolies noted by these clowns when they carried out their bit of pseudo science research.

This reminds me of when some half wit stated that red wine was good for you because the French drank lots of it and didn't suffer from as much heart disease as the Brits did.

The may is there because these people are frightened of litigation.

You have to question their motives in conducting and publishing this research.

I don't drink it for more than one reason!I don't like being ''wired up'' on caffiene and I don't like using antedotes for negative behavior like drunkeness, fatigue from overexertion or laziness! To do so,IMO,is a setup to continue the behavior to excess!

Although there are no major scientific studies to convince me that caffiene or Red Bull is detrimental to health in general, there are people that it is harmful to,such as pregnant women!

There are a few countries that ban it for various reasons, probably more to do with Nationalistic reasons than health reasons.None of these countries provide any substantial scientifc evidence that is convincing!

As a former health provider,I subscribe to the policy, that ''excess can be harmful to ones health'',from a general perpective, and think informed individuals have the right to make their own decisions regarding their own health and life while assuming ''all''responsibility for their actions!

just an observation. european red bull is differant to thai red bull, its lighter in colour , not as sweet , and it is carbonated. the latter i guess gets into your bloodstream quicker, whether this has any differant effect on your health ,i really dont know. i was off the day we did science at school !!!!!!!! :D :D :D

Smokers have increased signs of hypertension and coronary artery constriction after smoking.

Does it kill them after 1 night out at the Club, No.

Do the side effects continue to plague them after years of consumption, YES.

Caffeine is a very strong stimulant and it does have side effects.

So i must worry about drinking stimulating drinks, having a puff on a Monte Cristo and wearing or chewing on my Chinese hairband whilst using an inter-net cafe..(with the exception of pop's of course)....theres just no more fun out there anymore.. :( :( :(

and i do favour the Euro Red bulls and other larger canned drinks with fizz than than Thai ones, but M-150 is a fav.

The thai M150 is stronger than the redbull sold in the uk by far. i drink it cause i like it and can sometimes sort out a general fatigue . my moral on the subject is do as you like with in reason cause in 50 years from now we will all be in the same place in the bone yard . if we was to believe what is good and bad for us we would only be drinking spring water and organic veg
