We have just sent off for the required forms to apply for our 3 UK born kids (ages 2, 6 & 7) to become Thai nationals (hence dual nationality).

Our only concern is whether or not they would have to partake in the Thai national service (army training), we did ask at the embassy, but they was not exactly helpful, apparently it has something to do with the ages that they become Thai nationals, but they did not know the ages that were affected, so we're pretty much in the dark.

Do any of you guys have any experience with this at all?

18 I think. If a national they must register for service (my boy is the same in 6 years or so) but it seems there are so many want to go into the Thai army (get paid;albeit small) , its not a problem Sean

Thanks for the reply John, but my only problem with is, when their time came (if it does) and they had to go in and register, but was still living here in the UK with very little knowledge of the Thai language (my wife does not intend to teach them the lingo unless it's a dead cert we'll be moving back for good), I'm just wondering what would happen..

My brother in law (also a british citizen, aged 26) recently got the letter telling him to go register, but he managed to 'buy' his way out of it, he's just way to busy here earning a living trying to save money to build his palace in the jungle .

Don't know the rules but this was the reality for my stepson, 100% thai but dual nationality. He had to report to Amphoe here in Thailand, saw the recruiting sergeant, who informed us, he's got his quota, took the bottle of chivas I happened to have in my hand. Signed him off with multiple wa's to me . End of matter, took about 1 hour.
