dual pricing

PostAuthor: laphanphon » October 24, 2009, 7:35 pm

didn't notice a thread on this, if already,

little lady out and about, doing her thing, while i was balcony sitting doing mine, returns, time to munch, saw a place while out, 'SaenUdon', mix of western/thai food, fair price, lets give it a try. fine, looks nice, smiles all around, menu looks fine............BUT, whoa bucko, WTF, they made the ultimate mistake, gave me an english menu, she got a thai menu, so i notice lasagna on her menu, 89, mine 110. ok, don't open that water we just ordered, we won't be staying, dual pricing, 'oh, not a problem, give you thai price' yes, problem shouldn't be 2 prices, good bye, and sad part is, nice menu, though no customers and it was dinner time. that's a considerable difference, 33 % more for being a foreigner, simply unacceptable, and the rest of the menu was about the same high mark up.

it gets worst, go to a favorite restaurant, DI DI's, good food, good value, a regular when in town. new menus, and yes, you guessed it, one thai, one english, never had before, always mixed menu. and though marginal difference, again, dual pricing. i didn't feel like voting with me feet again, so simply ordered off the thai menu, knowing i would not be returning. if not hungry and no desire to search out another, i would of walked. very sad indeed. that's 2 in one day. it really is never ending.

always ask for the thai menu if you get 2 english menus, if they say they don't have, walk out. i always compare. best of luck to all, and again, enjoy your stay.

well, i'll give BBB's and NY Bistro a try before leaving, an if not up to expectations, i don't see a need to return to nong khai, except for bailey's run, i can get my Rudy's sugar fix and relax riverside, while Ree does her laos shopping. very sad. [-X [-X

Hi La, good to see you on the Nong Khai forum.

Also, you're certainly the 1st to post about the dual pricing issue in Nong Khai, and yes you are correct, it does exist, but thankfully only in a few places around town, including the one you mention.

Thai Thai and Dee Dee's are quite the opposite, good Thai food at low or reasonable prices, there are also a fair few others about, but homework needs to be done on them.

I don't think you will have any issues with your choice of Beer Belly Billys or the New York Bistro in town though, both do very good food at fair prices.
