External Hard Disk Drive

PostAuthor: BobHelm » February 19, 2009, 1:50 pm

Didn't know whether to put this here or under shopping - but decided here.
I am looking to buy an external hard disk drive for my lap top.
Size not too important, but on the smaller size I would guess (350 GB or so).
Anyone bought one lately in Udon or any recommendations/advice as to a model or a shop???
Some idea of price would be useful too...

WD - western digital puts out some nice products, made in thailand, dependable, i have 4 of them, ext, 2 int, all doing fine. though bought and brought from usa. usual suspects, hardware house and 108 IT, they are just a bit more expensive than usa versions, which are made here, but usually 1st generation and cheaper in states, go figure.

Just tick on Harddisk External, and then click on the left side flashing box at the bottom.

This mob are in the Complex.

Western Digital - which they quote - is a good brand.

Yes LA I have bought Western Digital in the past (in UK) and have always been very satisfied with them.
Thanks for the link Jack, plenty of information there. I guess they are on the second floor??? Over to the far right hand side, or are they the quite big place on the left???

I use Buffalo MiniStation's http://www.buffalo-technology.com/produ ... nistation/

I've never had problems with them. The data transfer is fast and the case is durable and shock resistant. Check the software that comes with them, mine came with memeo Backup software utility http://www.memeo.com/. Every time I plug in my hard-drive it checks updated files on my system and backs them up. If ever my computer were to crash I have a complete backup of my old computer setup that I can recover easily.

I purchased mine from the complex a few shops to the right of the laptop shop. They also have a very good range in Khon Kean if you don't mind the 1 hour drive.

WD probably are the best of the bunch here, but the drives you buy in the West are Grade A drives. The ones you get here are Grade B or C.

The grade As contain less read/write errors than the other grades.

That was the only useful thing to come out of 2 years living with a WD QA engineer. #-o

WD, Maxtor Seagate are all much of a muchness. Any of those ought to be fine. I purchased a Maxtor in Udon 3 years ago and it is still running with no problems.

Hardware House on the 2nd floor of the complex (the big place with an array of notebooks to the front) have a good range of Western Digital external drives. I was going to get one a few weeks back. They have firewire and USB. I forget the exact prices but I just couldn't decide on size Vs. price. Will I get 500GB? #-o Just couldn't make my mind up. Depends on your usage of course... I was downloading a few movies and maybe 1 movie is 600-700MB but now TV series is my thing and each one can be up to 6GB. Now I am thinking of getting a 1 Terrabite drive.
