External hard drives

PostAuthor: douglas » November 22, 2008, 2:36 pm

Hi,Looking for help. When working at home in the British Isles i used to deal a lot with a firm called Maplins, they dealt mainly with electronic equipment. I still get there catalouges sent to me by e-mail over here. The last one showed a external hard drive from Maxtor. It had a capacity of 1.5TB, enough to store 480,000 Dig. photos, 24960Hrs dig. music (mp3), or 1500Hrs of dig. video. I have only got a 120G hard drive on my portable and it is getting full and i have 10 1G memory cards from my camera full, this would be ideal for me and also the family. The price including V.A.T. for this in the U.K. is 129GBP.I was wondering if anyone knows if, and where, you can get this in Udon. Thanks for any help.Cheers Doug.

sounds inexpensive, shy of 7000, doubt if you will find anything here or thailand for that. got a MaxPro 1 TB couple months ago from pantip, shy of 10 K baht, specifically for multi media player, nice for thailand, but no great bargain. not sure who manufactor is, but has multiple media decoders in it, i think, though have to open a few on different player (VLC). seen some nice bargains in the states, always seems to be cheaper, but i'm a bit flush with externals already. maybe next year

good luck in your search, there's a shop on watana rd, IT 108, then one down by wing 23, same side at one of the u-turns. of course at the tech/phone section of mall, pricing varies greatly, so take your time. some nice bargains in bkk, always cheaper than udon, and current stuff, if heading there any time soon. i'm partial to fortume mall, on ratchada, list as IT MALL on maps, has subway stop out front. near new Espanada mall/carrefour/robinson for reference, but different stop. actually walkable between malls, have walked it, and i'm lazy.

I've seen 1 and 1.5 TB hard drives at iBeat on 2nd floor of complex. Not the cheapest place in town but some very good equipment. Haven't priced them because I don't need that much memory... yet. :-k

This is Hardware House's website. Have a look for external hard drives at your leisure.

Just click in Hard disk external box, and hit "enter".

640 GB !!! 4,000 baht.

The brand is "WD element".
They are made in Thailand and Malaysia but it's a foreign brand.
Fan included into the case. (ideal for not overheating: very important!!!!!)

It's already fully formatted in FAT32, which you can connect to your USB port to watch directly movies into your computer and into a DVD player or directly with the television if they have USB port.

I bought mine at The Mall in Korat,
don't know for Udon Thani.
Ask in the shops for the "WD element".
The shop owners that know about external hard disks in Thailand should know this brand and they can order it in Bangkok...
Hope this helps

WD is Western Digital (American) which I believe is made in Thailand under licence

WD, good brand, have 3 ext. and both laptop and desktop have in from manufacturer (HP). as did past computer, only one crapped out (original desktop, 2 yrs ago, at 3 yrs old), and not necessarily the harddrive.

states have 1st generation/latest model/features, and cost less sadly, but marginal. unless you or know someone able to bring, really not worth posting, possible loss or taxed. one buyer beware, if buying for internal laptop, take with you and make sure slots on motherboard line up, as mine did not, so, another external, yippy, just what i need, they stay cool and can take a little vibration, newer usa versions are more tolerant to both, again, marginal.

Maxtor and western Digital are sound brands. You do not a fan inside the case, despite what one poster said. You can get them for the same price or similar at the shopping centre next to the Charoensri Hotel.

what about seagate & samson H/D ? As for cooling you can buy attachment to the H/D that has two mini fans running that will cool it down. a point of interest if you bought your W/D in the states in not under guarantee in Thailand only products bought here are guaranteed here to the best of my knowledge

Seagate and Smsung are fine too. Really there is not that much difference these days. I tend to prefer maxtor, but that is because i have always worked with them and installed them when building PCs, no other reason.
