Years ago I cut a deal with my banker, I promised not to loan money and he promised that he wouldn't fix airplanes;o) The arraignment has worked well.

This worked for me. Since you have a US bank account, apply for a couple of PayPal MasterCard debit cards, one for you and one for the wife. The cards will have different numbers, hers will have her name but both will be on the same PayPal account. You transfer $$$ from your US account to the PayPal account and use the card as an ATM card or for purchases here as it's on the 'Plus' network. It's limited to $400/day cash and (I think) $1200 purchases per 24-hours. Only you can 'top-up' the PayPal account online as well as being able to turn-off or cancel the cards individually.

I set this up for the girlfriend 3 years ago and worked splendidly as she could pay the bills, rent, etc., or buy tickets to fly out to see me. Now we are married, she has returned the trust by giving me a spare ATM card for her Bangkok Bank account (probably most of my PayPal money anyway!)

I have both lent and borrowed money in Thailand: With farang and Thai.

I've no complaints about either end of the deal. Have done time payments and lump sum. The people I've trusted and have trusted me are family and friends.

Of course there is always the possibility of someone being unable or unwilling to repay a loan, or for me to do the same, although I consider it very slim with the people involved.

In matters of money it is always best to stay in your own individual comfort zone. Friends and family are more important than money.

udon if some one is unable to repay a loan I can give loan forgiveness but if they do not want to pay that is inexcusable just out right stealing because they knew before they borrowed the money they were going to scam you IMO I had a family member (thai) needed money to buy a computer for her son he was attending college and failing his grades because he needed a PC and ask me to loan them the money I did one better I bought her son a PC and told my sister in law it was a gift
this way there is no problem but of course if the amount is very large I will ask why you need such a large amount of money then I will decide if I want to loan them the money this will not be a gift if I do
