Tried it - they wouldn't touch it as its not hallmarked.

We had it valued (at a cost) and they stated it "looked similar" to 24ct but they couldn't be certain without a full test on the metal (at a huge cost) and when asked for a value - got away by saying "if I were to buy a similar one in the UK - it would cost me xxx pounds" (but of course it would be hallmarked)

The gold shops here handle that stuff every day so know what they are looking for - many UK jewelry shops will never have even seen 24ct gold - let alone put a value on it.

If you decide to go ahead - please keep us posted as to your success (if any)

I took some Thai gold to a quality jeweller in London some years back and they told me the same as above, no hallmark not interested, but would buy it for scrap value, I would have been charged for the valuation first. So, IMO no it isn't worth it.
Now, I have seen a guy on eBay selling gold plate jewelrey, seems to be doing Ok out of it too. Have a look at the sales he's made and work it out for yourself. The seller goes by the user name stevenp6905

i'll also agree with above post, all in usa, all is stamped inside, and first thing a jeweler looks for. if in reference to other post about whether to sell up thai gold in usa/worth it, or leave it, or bring and sell. if having a thai / chinese market to sell to, you may, may make a profit, but need to know your stuff.

do the math, and figure what an ounce of gold, certified in western world sells for...........UP2U 8)

Hallmarked Gold..

Simple Gold Hallmark Guide

Hallmarking (also called assay or standard marking) is the official quality control mark that determines the purity of gold and other precious metals.

To receive a price quotation using our scrap gold calculator, you'll need to know the weight and type of gold you have.Fortunately, modern digital kitchen (or postage) scales are very accurate, allowing most customers to gain a relatively accurate indication of the weight of their gold. Identifying the type of gold can be a little more tricky, which of course requires us to read and decipher the hallmark stamped on the item.

A gold ringFor the purposes of explaining the various marks, we'll use this ring.
The first mark we see is the makers mark, telling us who manufactured the item (in this instance, H Samuel).

The next mark we see is a Crown or Gold Standard Mark. This was first introduced in 1798 and can now been seen on all UK hallmarked gold that’s 9, 14 18 and 22ct. The crown also appears on old 12 and 15 carat gold, however this was stopped in 1932.
We now come to the mark that tells us the gold fineness (purity). First, let's look at the shape stamp. You’ll notice it's a rectangular shape with the corners shaved off. This again tells us the item is gold. An oval stamp would indicate the item is silver and a 'house' shaped mark is used for platinum items.

Purity / Hallmark Table
The Hallmarking Act 1973 stipulates the use of the above symbols to identify the precious metal. This millesimal stamp number tells us the precious metal content.

It's worth remembering that other countries have their own hallmarking standards, so the hallmark you see on your gold may well differ. Here is a table of common hallmark fineness stamps:
Gold Fineness

As our gold ring in the photo was made prior to 1973 (Hallmarking Act), the markings are slightly different, but still easy to understand. In our example, you can see the '22' stamp, indicating 22 carat gold.
The next mark tells us which assay office hallmarked the jewellery item. There are 4 assay offices in the UK:

* Birmingham (Anchor symbol)
* Sheffield (Rose)
* London (Leopard)
* Edinburgh (Castle)

The final stamp on our ring is the date stamp which tells us the year this item was tested and certified for fineness. The shape of our letter 'T' tells us this ring was hallmarked in 1993.
As you can see, a hallmark can tell us a lot about the item. Providing you can identify the type of gold you have and its weight. you can use our scrap gold calculator to work out the value of your item(s).

Don't worry if you can't find these details out. We can still value your scrap gold and you're under no obligation to accept our offer -we'll always return your gold, free-of-charge.

BeerMonkey,,, does your ref mean the UK "dealers" won't accept the Thai gold marked with 24k inside?

Thai and US dealers/jewellers seem to be able to do an immediate on the spot valuation of karat, why does it seem to cost so much in the UK?

Wasn't it something like " you can get a pair of gold ear-rings in our shops for less than the price of a sandwich, - why ? because our gold is total crap" !!

Then wondered if it might be possible to turn back the clock for just a few short minutes :)

A relative of the ex wife,had a large piece of gold.Shaped like a boat.On the bottom was a 6 figure number
He said it was bought over to Thailand by his Grandmother many years ago from China.
As I was going to Uk,He asked me to try sell it.I took it to UK.
But nobody was interested.No Hallmark.In the end I bought it back again.The Missus new a friend of a friend who dealt in Gold.She had him melt it down and make a ring, and neckless. 6 baht in weight!
But I think it was an artifact .Melted down! What a waste!
