Helmet Checks

PostAuthor: PopsIcafe » April 23, 2008, 9:19 am

Just heard it on the news (Udon Thani News Channel) that the police will be checking people on motorbikes both in the day and evening. My understanding from the TW that they had helmet checks at midnight last night. So if your out and about make sure you have the helmet on.

Police to be tougher on motorcyclists

The police have renewed efforts to get tough on motorcycles and passengers riding pillion who fail to wear safety helmets.

The Metropolitan Police Bureau said motorcyclists who fail to abide by safety regulations will immediately face a 500 baht fine.

The fine will be doubled if passengers riding pillion are not wearing a helmet. Police warned the helmet must also be up to internationally accepted standard.

I was editing that into my post when you replied but, let's remain optimistic.

It ought to be rigourously implemented across the kingdom.

And mandatory international quality helmets for cyclists too.

And while I'm on a roll here, fining parents who allow their bundles of single digit joy to ride the family Honda without a clue about road safety or basic highway protocol.

And mandatory seatbelts too, no dudes sitting on top of outraegously over-loaded trucks, shooting / impounding soi dogs that are known by locals to be regularly hazardous to road use...I could go on...

no need to, the laws isn't there for enforcement for safety. all they have to do is impound the motorbike under current law until bike and drivers are compliant. but then you couldn't issue another ticket for the same thing tomorrow. job security.

don't think we need to wear seat belts while city driving. can't remember last time i exceeded 30-40 kms an hour. i can have a head on at that speed and chuckle about it. 8)

I'm often impressed by the school kids sitting on top of the school bus or hanging off the back of it while it goes along at around 60kph

On the subject of them red 'buses'(songtaew I think they're called) are they the most dangerous drivers around? They seem to wait until someone, usually on a motorbike, gets close to passing them before they pull out.

stop, we hit a tree backwards doing about 60 mph, somehow no injuries. good think we were all drunk or our necks would of snapped. the only time me and a bud put our seat belts on, and what happens, we hit backwards. pre 2am beer run, sad. been in some nasty, thankfully the co pilot spared us any injuries or dead bodies, well, ones i've been in. other friends obviously no so lucky, too many, too young. we all have too many stories, luckily mine have happy endings.

so don't listen to me, where it, i do out of town.  8)

Time for a physics lesson.

Kinetic energy is what an object has due to its movement.
The formula is 1/2 Mass x Velocity squared.

Ever walked into a door or a lampost ? Hurts a bit !!!!!!!!!!!!!

80Kg man walking at 4 MPH (1.788 m/s)
1/2 80 x 1.788 squared = 128 Joules

Now get in your car and drive at 30mph, hit a tree or wall
1/2 80 x 13.411 squared = 7194 Joules

It is going to cause big damage to your head.

I keep telling the 16 yr old son this but he is young and bulletproof and is sure that he will not die today.
He did hit a dog in the road last year, made a mess of his leg but he had the crash hat on for once.
Safe motoring folks.

Are there any international quality helmets for sale in Thailand?
In Thailand I only see the thin plastic toy helmets that are almost completely useless.
