Help With Internet Service Options in Udon

PostAuthor: mepaglet » January 13, 2009, 3:23 pm

Sawasdee Krup All,
I am finally ready to move into my new place in First Home, next week.
I need to find the best wireless internet service for the area, as I do all of my business over the net from my laptop.
Today (here in Bangkok), somebody told me that AIS' service was the best for outside of Bangkok....But another friend told me that CAT has the best (and fastest) service.
Can anybody provide me with information as to which is the best mobile internet provider for the Udon area (most important aspects = high speed, reliability).
Thanks in advance!
James

It sounds like you're going to set up this wireless service at your home. If so, you'll probably get along better with either TOT (which I have) or TTnT - both of which are the telephone and internet service providers here. I have a wireless router (purchased myself) at my home with TOT and can go most anywhere within about 500 mtrs and still get a good signal. There's a vacant lot between me and my sister-in-law. She uses my wireless connection at her home without a problem. BTW, I live inside the ring-road and I don't know how good the service might be in First Homes area but a friend of mine who lives there hasn't been complaining.

Good luck, :wave:

Hi James Im in First Homes and use TTnT (not wireless)not brilliant by UK standards but reasonably good and from what I hear one of the better options, mine is used solely for communication to home and general PC use.

I use AIS GPRS as a backup for when my TOT (in First Home) goes down and when out of town. Data rates vary greatly, from a crawl of a few tens of bits per second to a few tens of kilobits per second. For the most part, its the later, and it seems pretty reliable.

You can try AIS GPRS pretty cheaply. Buy a SIM card and pay as little as 50 baht for a few hours to try it out.

I will need internet in my house in Hansa, about 2 km west from the Ring Road toward Kut Jap. Recommendations on the carrier/service?
I will connect direct to a PC and install a wireless router at the network termination for my laptop. Should I talk to a neighbor or two for cost sharing?

I used Loxinfo Ipstar and it was terrible. I then paid TOT to install their Ipstar and it was useless too. Unfortunately I am out in the boonies and had no other options. When GPRS EDGE started coverage in my area, I used both AIS and Dtac EDGE for service. I was rare when both were down. I was pretty satisfied with EDGE even though it's not that fast. Now CAT EVDO has coverage. I paid about 11,000 baht for the modem and am well satisfied. It costs me 790 baht a month for unlimited service. It is by far the best service I have had in Thailand.

Glat I will also be moving to the boonies some time in the next two or three months and I was going to install a satellite from TOT also now I would appreciate if you could post more info like what service you had and how long you had it i had satellite in the states and it was great no complaints other than price it was expensive now I look at the prices here and you can get there top of the line service for 2600 baht a month which is what I was paying in the states minus a few bucks

I suffered with Loxinfo Ipstar for about two years at a whopping 2,600 plus per month. The service varied from acceptable but no means what I was paying for to just simply stalling. Mostly it stunk. I changed to TOT Ipstar and also suffered with it for an additional two years. TOT was better only because it was cheaper. I also had all three speed packages. The only difference in speed was the downloads were faster. The cheapest package was as good as the most expensive other than downloads. The day that they took out that pathetic service was a happy day especially when I discovered that the MUCH cheaper GPRS EDGE was better than what I had.

Since I have had CAT EVDO, it almost like being back in civilization. I'd say that EVDO is five to ten times faster than EDGE. The speed goes up and down but it never quits.

I just got an email from a friend of mine in Krabi. He has the Loxinfo premium Ipstar package at 2,600 plus baht per month. He said his is working now and here are his speeds;

Download 221 kbps/ 27.6 KB
Upload 75 kbps/ 9.4 KB
Latency: 1227 ms

My EVDO is quite slow tonight for some reason. Here are my speeds;

Last Result:
Download Speed: 589 kbps (73.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 260 kbps (32.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 334 ms
