There is much in his story to suggest that there was a complete nonunderstanding of each others cultures and basic motivations for wanting and having a relationship together.
I do have some reservations about her ''affair''whether understandable or not!And that should be his ''out'' legally and financially if he chooses.
He must assume reponsibility for his mistakes, but he does not have to assume reponsibility for her ''violation'' of their relationship!

They want a man's money and, quite often, a British passport. Why can't these poor fools realise that?

I believe this is quite common. Many elderly gentlemen come to Thailand for prostitutes. Ultimately they end up with a man-eater that takes all their money and leaves them with a broken heart. I suggest they not get married, get a retirement visa, buy property in their own name, and if they do actually fall in love and find "the one" then wait a couple years and take her to see your country and decide on marriage that way.
I knew my foreign bride for 5 years before I met her in person and got married. We've had no problems and her desperately poor family has never asked for money and actually offered us money to help get started. They even lent us their motorbike so I could get to work and paid for our wedding, etc. I suppose poor is a relative term in Asia but I see so many 60+ year old men with 20 year old wives, they go buy property in the girl's name, and then they get dumped and have no recourse.
I suggest if you're looking for love, find someone in your age range

The guy who married a Thai woman is an embarrassment to all men. It's quite obvious that he's being used, and he should tell this woman to get lost. He must be stupid to waste all his money. I can assure you that in the eyes of his Thai wife the marriage is meaningless.
