Don't think anyone is trying to scare you, and don't think there is anything to be scared of, the country is great and i am sure you will love it, take a few weeks holiday, take in bangkok, try Koh samui or phuket or any other island,take in issan and chiang mai.
I remember my first arrival in Thailand back in 1988 i was younger than you then, fantastic time a real eye opener, i am sure you will have the same experiance, enjoy your smell of Thailand
