how a farang can work, stay as long as possible in Thailand?

PostAuthor: attagal » March 4, 2007, 7:58 pm

I just need some informations and advices about working in Thailand for farang. And how should I do to stay as long as possible in Thailand?
Anybody who stays here for a very long time and found a job here, pls give me some informations and good advices. I know a man from Paris who stays in Bangkok for 14 years and has a job as a French teacher but I didn't ask him how could he do that. #-o But I think I'm gonna ask him too. So please help me with some good advices about how to work here in Thailand for a long time as possible. If you know.
Thank you so much.

Thank you very very much for the visa informations, very kind of you.
No...lol I'm only 22 years. I've never been in Thailand before. This is gonna be the first time. The trouble is I don't know where in Thailand that I can get a job (only for farang) and where I can get some details of work.
You have an idea which job that is popular for farang to do in Thailand?
I know that may be teacher or something. I meant where lol I really have no idea.
Could I ask you questions? How long have you been in Thailand and you also have a job here?
Thank you so much about your help.

anybody can help me??? pls tell me if you know. ^_^

No way that you can work in Thailand legally without work permit. Not even voluntary work is permitted without licence. A work permit is very hard to obtain. And working in Thailand illegally is not a good idea since the subsequent punishment is very harsh.

People working in Thailand are without any right. There are always some trying to cheat some who are clueless and na๏ve enough to ignore regulations. Be aware that any foreigner will be monitored as soon as he starts anything what could be considered work.

Most jobs are restricted to Thai nationals.

Here you might get some more information:

The worst enemy of a foreigner in a foreign country is the other foreigners..

You can teach French providing that you find a school that is willing to employ you. Many schools offer French classes - but the pay is very, very low. Native English speakers receive the highest pay.

To teach any language in a school - the requirements are that you be a native speaker of the language that you are teaching and that you also hold at minimum, a bachelor's degree in some discipline. That can be gotten around - but you have to be good at what you do.

Just because you are a native speaker of a certain language does not mean that you can teach that language to anyone.

Well Attagal you asked for advise, so here goes. don't know why I'm doing this, my own kids never listen to me, so why should I think you will?
Firstly you don't give an indication of gender so I answer as to a male, but it is equally applicable to a female with a few minor adjustments.
You are very young to be pursuing the Thai dream, so my first suggestion is you put that dream on hold for now. Get yourself a good European wife, buy a house with a 30 year mortgage, contribute to the largest retirement pension you can afford. Then when your just 52, still quite young, the house will be paid for. Divorce the wife , sell the house, give her half if necessary, it will still be worth a lot by then, book a ticket to Thailand and start your dream. You will have a large cash sum to buy a place over here, a nice car and whatever else tickles your fancy. Plus a regular monthly pension income. No need to worry about scratching around to earn a living teaching or running a bar like so many seem to do.You will be a King and it won't be long before you will find your Queen. Its possible she won't even be born yet.At this time.
Assuming as most people do, your not really wanting fresh ideas but simply confirmation of your own, then you will ignore all that. So let me say. It may come as a surprise to know that French is not generally regarded as an important , must have, international language here, and as Thai law stipulates only native English speakers can be considered for English teaching posts, your chances of getting legal employment are very few.The alternative illegal way is not really a serious contemplation.
You might consider the alternative of Vietnam, where French , both language and lifestyle are more predominant, and your chances of earning a living this way are more likely. I understand the other attractions available are very similar to Thailand anyway.
To sum up, what I am really trying to say. Thailand is a great place to spend money , not earn it.It would be better to have 20+ years of sheer pleasure at age 52 , than 50+ years of worry and concern about making a living at age 22.
Whatever your decision, I hope it works out for you. :D
