Internet Connection Options

PostAuthor: chuck3000 » August 22, 2010, 8:04 pm

I have had TOT, and I also use CAT quite a bit, both work fine. But I was wondering about how to contact TT&T in Nong Khai about internet access, and what the fastest possible speed is.

Is there a phone number I can reach them at locally, or an office I can stop off at?

Also, aside from DSL, which is only so-so at best, who are the Broadband providers?

I saw one called BBB Broadband. Is there a contact number for them?

Also, is there a different name for TT&T now, in Phuket it seemed to change to BB something. Is this the same as BBB or 2BB?

Hey Chuck,

I had nothing but problems with BBB, but if you want to give them a try, here is their website:
http://www.3bb.co.th/home.php

You should find their contact details on the site.

CAT I found to be the most reliable ISP in Nong Khai, and the only other option you have for ADSL is TOT.

GPRS/EDGE is available through the mobile phone companies, AIS, DTAC and True, but again it's slow, but handy to have as a backup.

Question:
Does CAT provide a DSL option?

Right now I am using their CDMA and it's been great for the year I have had it no matter where I have been in Thailand.

I have an existing phone line, etc.

BBB:
I went to BBB's store on one of the main roads, and the staff told me they wanted 3,000 baht just to run the line to my soi, and then a year contract, and a monthly cost of like 1,200 baht. It seemed ridiculous, -especially after agreeing to sign, that's when they notified me about the year contract requirement.

I have since moved to a bigger house and have a year lease, but I think perhaps it's as you say, there might be problems.

TOT:
I had them at the last place and it was OK, but their staff didn't know much and I actually helped them set it up, and also identified a fault in the line which they had to fix. My girlfriend mentioned one of the guys probably 'lost face' when I logged him off my linux laptop and opened up Wireshark to scan the network, point out the router, and commence to configuring everything, and that might be why they are being so slow to move my connection to the new house. (that, and rain, and general laziness).

I do know that TOT has a "TOT Contract" section, which the staff are the same, but wear a different jacket, and for a given rate, they will come on a specific day you agree to, at a specific time, and do exactly what they are supposed to do, in record time. I used this before and I might find out how to do it here. It's better than dealing with the staff in their normal mode.

Also, I am curious as to what problems you saw with BBB.

I have seen a few issues on various carriers while in Thailand, and for BBB, perhaps they are oversubscribed, with users getting great speed to begin with, then somehow, getting segmented into an oversubscribed pool of users until they complain to TT&T, who may then "switch them back to the good line for a while".

If this is the case or similar I will certainly avoid them.
