internet in thailand

PostAuthor: Faalang_poochai » August 5, 2009, 11:57 am

sa-waht-dee,
What is it like to have internet in Thailand? I once went there with my mother, whom, is Thai blood. and at the time, they didn't have internet, or at least i never knew it though. But, anyways, since than, my mother has been back to Thailand. and I haven't been back since 15 years ago or so. and I was wondering what's the internet like there?
Do they have like high speed internet like they do here in the states? and do they have internet connection in some people's homes? What's the internet like now in Thailand?

Thanks!

Sa-waht-dee-krahp!

I've had a few issues with an unnamed ISP here in Nong Khai, in fact that was a bit of an understatement, a lot of issues would be more appropriate.

I switched isp's yesterday which seemingly has resolved most of them, touch wood.

As for high speed internet, I think you can get up to around 10mb now, maybe more in Bkk, but I don't rally think it would compare well with the service you get in the US, however I maybe wrong of course.

Internet in housing is available pretty much all over Thailand now, as long as you have a phone line in the vicinity, failing that there is always the satellite internet option (ipstar) via ToT.

As for "what's the internet like now in Thailand?", well I can only compare it to what I had back in the UK around 5 years ago.

But it works and it's available, so it will do the job for what most need it for.

OK, I normally buy one of those dial up cards from the 7-11 when I come over and hook up to the t'internet that way on the old laptop. Is there a broadband method that I can use? I noticed the niece using her mobile 'phone to hook up to the t'internet the last time I was in country.

You could always invest in a gprs modem, I have seen them for about 4 to 6000 in various IT shops around here, probably can get them cheaper if you hunt around.

But basically you just insert a mobile sim card into it and voila you are connected to gprs, which isn't a bad option as a temporary way to get connected. Some guys use it as a permanent connection but it can become costly unless you sign up to a monthly package for a few hundred baht.

Alternatively, if you have a fairly recent mobile phone with a built in mobile, you should be able to connect direct via that.

A gprs modem? Yes, I'll try that, thank you.

No problems Westerby, they are simple enough to set up and they seem to provide a pretty stable connection.

Further to what I wrote above,

it's possible to get a USB modem and pay the mobile 'phone company for the service. I believe one service does a pay as you go option at £15-00 for 1Gb, is there anything like that in Thailand?

I am certain that there are verious pre pay options here, but I think you buy a set number of hours as instead of a set download limit. It would be best to make the enquiries when you get here as there are a lot of options to choose from.

There is no shortage of shops around here Westerby, I am not aware of anybody having a bad experience so just shop around would be my recommendation.
