Internet Speed

PostAuthor: Kudjap or Bust » March 13, 2008, 12:12 pm

Is there anything I can do to speed up my internet connection when using a router.

I have TOT ADSL, an ADSL modem and a router, when I use the modem and disconnect the router I get better speeds..... I tried turning off the router firewall, no difference. Any ideas..... I'm trying this with a LAN connection to the router, I realise the speed will drop when I use the wireless option..

It is not clear that the router is to blame. Compared to ADSL speeds, especially as reported in Udon, the router should be blindingly fast. I would apply the same logic to going wireless. If the bits are dribbling it at 256 k/sec and the Wifi can handle 54Mb/s, (assuming only one user), the only overhead is the router's overhead communicating with your computer to manage the traffic ("Want another packet?", "Yeah, send it over...").

One thing that might be slowing down the network, which you might not observe if you remove the router and connect directly between one computer and the modem, is if there is other network traffic. You might want to repeat your experiment with all other networked devices (servers, computers, etc.) turned off.

How big of a speed difference are you talking about?

And what kind of router are you using?

I'm using an Aztech Modem and a D-Link Router.
Using an ADSL speed test I get the following

Router LAN
Download Speed: 967 kbps
Upload Speed: 269 kbps

Router Wireless
Download Speed: 857 kbps
Upload Speed: 237 kbps

Modem
Download Speed: 1302 kbps
Upload Speed: 420 kbps

I think it's quite a difference but maybe this is how it's supposed to be....

At these speeds, I can easily imagine that the router and wireless overhead are eating up some of your throughput. I had imagined you had much slower downloads and that the router was eating more of your potential bandwidth.

I don't know if there is a way to speed things up. Maybe somebody who understands these things will come up with an idea.

I will add that if I had download speeds like yours, I would be jumping for joy for a long time before trying to optimize the last 10%. I envy your connection.

You are quite lucky to have the speeds you have. On an extremely good day, and I do have to get up before 8 am, I can get at best 100 KB/sec. Normally after 8 or 9 am, I'm lucky to get over 5 to 10 KB/sec. Count your blessings. Of course, with the extremely slow down load speed, I get a chance to do a little reading while I'm waiting. I also have frequent complete outages when I can't even connect. These last sometimes for 2 to 3 days. My normal daily outages last about 1 to 2 hours. Yes I did say daily. I have been using TOT ADSL for 3 years now with absolutely no improvement and it seems to me, no desire from them to do anything about it.

ADSL problems

PostAuthor: nola-udon » March 14, 2008, 10:56 am

AZ,
TTT is not allowed access to the First Home Village. I ask them every few months or so. I really think TOT kicks back to them to keep the competition out of here. My brother-in-law lives within 500 meters of my home in Rom Yen Village and he doesn't have the problems with speed or outages that we experience. He uses TT&T. Thanks for trying to help.

Hi Kudjap

First at all the question that i have is why you use a modem and a router????

Or can your router not dial into the internet?? if so did you configure it as Router or as Bridge??
Or do you use the Router for Wireless only as Access point??
Or do you use it as Hub??
Use the router or use the modem........why you use both?? and please turn your firewall back on

Some more Details about your Hardware Configuration would be very usefull.

Thanks :-)
