We are living about 3k from Nong Wua Sor which is on the road to Nong Bua Lamphu. Went to TOT on Tues and enquired about ADSL as we have a phone line here at the mother in Laws place. We were advised that should be no problem. Next day we return with Phone Account holder as that was required and same lady was not there so went to next. Sorry to far away, cheched with technical guy sitting behind. Yep to far away.

I know people in village have ADSL and in Nong Wua Sor also which is further away. I have GPRS but getting a little expensive with exchange rates they way they are and would like ADSL as it is more than 50% cheaper.

Anyone else have somilar problems ? How did you overcome or did'nt you?

Thanks
Kevro

The rule of thumb seems to be (I am happy to be corrected) that you need to be within 2km of the local telephone exchange to get an adequate service out of ADSL. Further than that, things slow down dramatically.

They're just being lazy. Quite normal here.

GPRS Edge on your mobile phone costs a few hundred baht a month. AIS & DTAC both do reasonably priced plans that you can activate using a simple dialled menu and the payment is taken from your credit on the phone (sorry, I can't remember the number you need to dial)

Pakawala, I believe that you live within Udon central, perhaps not too far from a wireline distribution point to get the ADSL at a good rate. I wonder how far my house the Hansa is from the nearest wireline distribution node. Does anyone here know the coordinates of the only two guys I met in Hansa: Michael, a retired American navy guy, and the Australian guy who runs the restaurant there. I am trying to order the service before I get there. Thanks for your help.

Ray when you get to Udon contact me I will take you to H/H and get you a legal copy of windows don't worry and stop reading all those horror stories as for a desk top you have many choices and I will help you because that what I do

Hi Marmite

the actual rate for DTAC weekly is 266 Baht per week (Not monthly). Makes it around 1150Baht per month which is a little expensive for dial up internet plus its slow. Free for dial up in a lot of places.

Might follow up with the locals with ADSL and those in Nong Wua Sor. Just a little cheezed off with TOT giving the false hope and then snatching it away. The tech guy would not even get off his chair in the back office.

AIS is 374 a month for 100 hrs. more than enough for myself, and i'm on a lot. give you over 3 hrs actual on time a day, so plenty. i open pages, a bunch, then disconnect, do some reading, then hop back on. sim card was 200 baht. never have any consistent problems, and that's country wide. really satisfied for the price, as unless lucky, the service that the others provide doesn't seem to be very good. if needing to upload any substantial amount, that's what Pop's is for, or good reason to sip some beer at irish clock. but i update all my software w/AIS, sometimes 50 megs. so it's fine. 8)

I live 1.2km off the Udon-Loei Hwy and a few km from the nearest network box. When I contacted TOT about ADSL, they initially told me I was too far away, but then one of the engineers gave me a modem and a password and told me to give it a try. I did, and it worked. I'm probably at the edge of coverage, but I rarely have any dropout problems. Most of the phone lines in my neighborhood sit in ricefields, so I'm pretty surprised that I can even get dialup.
Prior to changing to ADSL, I used CAT's CDMA phone. I paid about 3500 baht for a desktop phone (looks like a normal phone, but it's a mobile) and about 590 baht per month for unlimited time. Speed was consistently at 120-130kbps. It's not lightning but it was twice/three times the speed of normal dialup. If you live near NWS, you should easily be in range of one of CAT's CDMA towers. Go to the office in Udon and they'll be able to tell you if you're in range. I only gave it up after finding out I could connect to ADSL.

Hi laphanphon

I actually use it a lot more than that. I follow the ASX (Australian stock Market) From 0500 to at least 1230 and then intermittently there after and on and off over weekends. Need a lot more than the 100 hours per month. Might use nearly all that in a week.

Do they have any larger download packages?

Thanks for the reply.

NO. when i day traded, i used IPSTAR, very happy at the time, as only thing availabl in paddy land, and no phone line for me. very dependable. new owner of house, reistalled and is happy with it. though recently had mixed reviews from a couple people, but i thought it very good. did the same as you, all night long, 6-10 pages open, half streaming, all good.

good luck, ERHE.OB, pops more than couple 100 %, i want 10 %, it flops.............have a nice day, due diligence, you crazy listening to forum traders

Hi Parrott

We are about 3.5k off the same road and there is a big telecommunications tower at the turn off. Not sure where the nearest network box is though, bit of work to be done to find it me thinks.

CAT are next to TOT I think, will check them out next time we are in town. We need a new phone as the landline phone here is cactus. We are about 4 houses from the ricefields. We are around 3k from Nong Wua Sor so we are sitting in a potential dead zone. I will check with CAT tomorrow.

Thanks for the advice

Kev,

Just curious, but no mention of checking with TT&T. Have you checked them out.

Hi Papaguido

Yep TOT actually suggested I go and check them out. Same reply, to far out. They probably suggested that just to get me out of the office.

Hi all

Well I got ADSL.

Seems you need to know someone there. We have friends in Nong Wua Sor who happen to have a friend at TOT. next thing you know they are handing us our modem and hubby helps on the install. Problems were discovered as the user name was incorrect as supplied by TOT. Our friends made a call to TOT and next thing you know we have a van at our door. We had solved problem ourselves by phone to the call centre but the guys tested our download speed and were not happy, then checked the phone and were less happy. Got a new copper wire coming at some stage.

ADSL even not running at optimum is 5 times faster than the mobile.

I am so happy.
