Is the bar scene realy that grim ?

PostAuthor: P'Uaan » December 29, 2008, 9:56 pm

You lot seem to be painting a fairly dour picture of the current drinking emporiums in Udon.

After many years in Pattaya, its now become a neccessary to move on, I thik Pattaya always bights you on the arse eventually. The obvious choice is my mrs's home town, Udon, which Ive only ever visited on day trips.

Youve now got me a bit worried, that Im going to become very bored very quickly. I am a bit of a bar fly, but a small selection of empty bars with ugly girls and Katoeys doesnt realy wet my whistle. Is it dead all the time ? or do weekends pick up ?

I think the real problem is that there are just too many bars in Udon with (because of the lack of tourist/visitors) too few customers. The attractive girls either hook onto the first prospect they see or just go somewhere else, or do something else. This does not, necessary, make for bad news if you are a butterfly :D (which I am not). If you are always 'out & about' then sometimes you will find an attractive girl and you would not have much competition.... :D :D
When there were just the dozen or so bars in Soi Falang plus a few others scattered about then it was always possible to find some very attractive girls in the bars, I do not think that is the case now. If you come to Udon & are discerning then I think you will often go home alone..... :D :D

To turn the thread on its head, the bar scene is probably quite grim for those girlies that have to service flabby Farangs (especially the Brits) to make a bit of cash. But hey, no one's twisting their arm...are they? :|

I think Bob has it down pat,a very clear defining of the P4P and bar scene in Udon. Not enough customers to make it worth while for the ''lookers'' to stick around and to many bars for the local expat population!
If you are a barfly, you will find the bars cheaper and plentiful for drinking anyway!

agree, bob nailed that well.

as long as you don't have an introvert personality, think that's what its called. ok, off the horse, if you're not shy and have a set, you really should have no problems playing single in Udon. though if dependent on bar scene alone, the pickins may be slim and expensive as compared to patters or tourist area. there really are just too many bars per customers, as mentioned, not a tourist destination, and the expats are mostly settled in and not really looking, well, on a consistent basis. so the gals have a rough go at making money, hence sometimes the high prices, trying to compensate, and lack of quality hanging around town too long.

as far as the bars being grim, well, with few exceptions, it's best to bring the festivities with you. if out and about, not Irish Clock or Nobi‘s, i will get bored very fast, unless with couple friends, then it really doesn't matter where we're at, we'll enjoy ourselves. which is probably why the night market meetings seem to work well for expats here. since not on the prowl, bringing the festivities with us, and some of the best eye candy, why bother with the 'bars', and pay big beer prices for small beers. had good times in orange moon, DN, fiddler's green, and even Harleys, ok, grand opening, but again, only because of the company i was with. been out and about by ourselves, me and Ree, my better half, and have a beer at best, or walked into DN, and simply turned around and left. not that we bore each other, but we can have more fun at night market talking to sis or back home/hotel.

personally, i'm one of those hopeless romantics, and actually prefer long term relationships, just not very good at it. so when the fail, i really don't mind playing single either, for a while, though i'm too needy, or need to be needed, so then back to relationship mode, as long as that next one will last. with the right personality, you'll have no problems which ever you prefer. enjoy. 8)

Maybe I dind't explain myself properly in the first post. Its not the girls Im bothered about. Im in a long term relationship myself and have very rarly strayed. What I need is a bit of farrang to farrang conversation once in a while. Chat about and watch live sport, that kind of thing. Somewhere where there is a bit of atmostphere, ( craic ! if you know the irish expression ) if such a place exists.

Im sick to death of the same list of questions from the girls and hate connect four. I dont mind conversing with them once Ive had a few, but if sober they bore the pants off me now ( not literally ). Ive been in the Irish Clock before, and that place would seem like my ideal starting point for a session but Im guessing its quite expensive.

Thats another thing, when I was last there i seem to remember the prices being a bit higher than pattaya. Is that still the case or has the increased competition forced the prices down ? Not that Im broke or kee neow or anything, just started to be carefull as the pound is so **** at the moment and most of my cash is still over there.

I do know one guy who lives in Udon but I dont realy think he goes into town that much. I guess Im just going to have to wander around.

If you see a fat four eyed english man staring into his glass looking bored, mines a singha.

I agree with Bob as well. When in day & night the other night I looked around and worked out that at 30 years old I was the probably the youngest guy there. 8)

There were a couple of guys that were half dead, a couple with zimmer frames. The rest were fat and repulsive. The girls in Udon should be charging double! :D

Some of the girls working were not too bad though, =D> and i would probably go back again just for a game of pool and a bit of eye candy. :-"

I also thought the beers were reasonably priced and the service friendly. The area is also lovely and clean - a nice change.

in that case, yes, mojo's, though i don't go there, irish clock, steve is quite personalable, and there's is always the night market meetings on the 1st saturday of the month, after that, you'll have 10 new friends, if you want, or maybe not. and the wifes get to meet and greet each other, which as you know by now can be a possitive or a negative

i enjoy nobi's company, since knowing him for so long, but have to catch him before he is off to the farm.

you should have no problem finding like minds or not to discuss and solve the world's problems, and vent to each other if necessary. pop pop's internet is a get together once in a while if all out and about around noon, lol.

Yep Pattaya it is not. Been a long time since I was out playing but from what I hear very expensive.

Harry's bar is another good location for a chat and from time to time he does have a looker or two in there. The girls here compared to Pattaya are not agressive. You go into Harry's it's there if you want it. But, it won't be in your face.

The really pretty girls are in the Thai places, but if you don't speak Thai pretty tough.

My suggestion would be to come here rent a furnished place for a few months check things out and then make your decesion.

Udon is not a one size fits all anymore then Thailand is. I like here for a variety of reason's none of which have anything to do with the bar scene.

But you are not going to learn Udon overnight.

If money was no object.
I would open a bar in Udon Thani, and employ persons that look like Harada Ourei.
