ITV's voice of boxing dies

PostAuthor: Irish Alan » January 26, 2009, 1:15 am

Legendary boxing commentator Reg Gutteridge has died at the age of 84.

The journalist, who boxed as an amateur, became a reporter after the Second World War when he lost a leg after stepping on a landmine at Normandy.

He became a household name as ITV's voice of boxing, forming a memorable partnership with the former world lightweight champion Jim Watt.

He was awarded an OBE in 1995 and worked at six Olympic Games.

Gutteridge became friends with many of the boxers he commentated on and Muhammad Ali once visited him in hospital during the 1980s.

His daughter Sally said: "He was a much-loved husband, father and grandfather. He touched many lives."

I used to work with Reg, back in the 1970's on the old London Evening News, which went tits up in 1980.
I was a editorial assistant and Reg, had his desk on the specialist section, and not with the sports guys who were at the other end of the office. He was very popular with us, and his knowledge of boxing was unsurpassed.
I remember John Conteh coming in the office, to see Reg and all us of talking to him, John was WBC Light Heavyweight Champion at the time. I remember Reg sometimes used to wear his "World of Sport" (ITV) tie to work.
