Laptop

PostAuthor: douglas » April 21, 2008, 9:40 am

Hi, having problems with my laptop, unable to get on the internet, like a idiot left computer out while i went shopping and kids thought they would test it. Everything else works O.K.
When internet cable is plugged in it says internet service provider connected and the speed. but when I got to internet explorer i get unable to conect. I checked that it was not switched to working offline in the tools menu, also the cable and modem work on another computer.
So if anybody has any ideas i can try or know of a good place i can get it checked i would be grateful.
Cheers Doug.

Another trick is to right click on the "wireless" icon in the task bar and click repair. Works fo me most of the time.

Are you on dial-up or broadband/ADSL? Sometimes simply re-setting the router (switch off for a couple of minutes) sorts it.

Hi,
Thanks for your help.
WS. connection was connected.
Thai. Tried this but did not work.
Irish. I'm on ADSL with TT&T, when router and same cables are connect to another computer. it works O.K.
The only thing I can think of is that I have 3 internet connections, a aircard which I use whwn away from home, and a dial up connection which I use in the U.K. and the TT&T connection. The dial up connection icon has a tick dn it which if I remember right indicates it's the default setting, I've tried to put TT&T icon as the default but I can't seem to do this. I think I'm getting to old and my memory is fading or to much Chang.
Thanks anyway cheers Doug

Doug,

Not sure what operating system you are using, but if you are using any of the Vista/XP/98 series of windows, there is a "system restore" feature in control panel that always seemed to work for me.

It sets all your settings back to what they were a few days ago or a few weeks ago.

It is a last resort before lugging the magic box down to the computer store.

Good Luck-----

Oh and welcome to the "MEMORY IS FADING CLUB" :D

You should not need to do a system restore to fix a connection issue.

First off, are you trying to connect wirelessly via the router?
If so, then try connecting directly through the modem.

By the way, did you get any set up discs from TT&T?

If so, pop them back in to reset the settings.

If still no joy, let me know

I agree that if the OP is sure that it is a connection problem, then for sure what you suggested should work.

BUT.......the OP said in his first post that he left the laptop out and kids were playing around with it. With my experience with kids, who knows what they did.

Deleted some dll files?
Added some connection sites?
Deleted or changed files, all could have an effect on the connection problem.

So yes, if he is sure that it is only a connection problem with the modem/router then your suggestion should suffice.

But if he still can't figure it out, I simply suggested a restore option before taking it to the shop.

It's as simple as that.

Capish?

Hi Bkk
No i am not trying to connect wirelessly, I got the set up disc from TT&T inserted it but half way through said not connected to internet, even though the comp. said i was connected, I had the password etc from them but no joy when i tried to reinstall. I had norton goback installed but when i tried to use this at first it said goback was stopped due to massive internet acvtivity. I tried windows recovery but this still did not work. As a last resort i put in the recovery disc which i got with the computer which is sopposed the restore to when i bought the comp. Got, not compatable with this system, How bad does it get. I've had the comp. over 3 yrs, went to change it last month but found the max. CPU was about 2000 for a laptop, Mine was 3800, DVD rewrite and 1000 RAM Wi-Fire etc, so i would be down grading at min 45,000 Bhat plus a extra 6,000B to get a gen. copy of windows. I'm sure it's just a internet fault with the comp. as i got everything else working O.K.
I suppose the last option is to take it to a shop who nows what there doing if anyone can suggest one i would be grateful.
Please excuse spelling as the youngest daughter has got chickenpox and i've got mild symtoms and can not see to well even with glasses.
Yhank you all foe your help Cheers Doug.

I think your issue might be right up there in bold. I had a similar experience a while back with my laptop. I ended up deleting the GPRS connection on mine because it wouldn't let me change the default.

I would not worry too much about your default setting if dial up. My Network places > Network connections the upper tier is dial up correct? In mine my default setting is UTV Internet and I haven't used that for almost 2 years. Any subsequent ADSL connections over-rode my old dial-up. Where it says Lan or Hi-speed Internet in the lower tier, double-click on your TT&T icon then click on properties. Are all the boxes checked? Client for Microsoft Networks down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). In mine 5 boxes all checked.

Try this:

Start > Control panel
Double click the System icon.
In the system properties window, select the hardware tab and click on device manager.

A new window will open up, scroll down to network adapters and open up the list by clicking on the little + symbol.

Right click on the adapter relevent to your internet connection and uninstall.

Reboot the system, and it should reinstall the driver for the adapter, and fingers crossed fix the issue you have.
