Laptop Turns off unexpectedly.

PostAuthor: beer monkey » November 6, 2008, 5:42 am

Now and again my Laptop just shuts off instantly, no warning no reason just as if someone has pulled the plug so to speak and it just kills the power, it just did it and when i turned it back on it just went to start up and then 'Bam' off again, able to resume though (restore back on last page i was on firefox)all normal now, but i suppose of late it has done it 3-4 times last 4 weeks, Always use Firefox and its Vista and have a full battery....is this another small vista glitch possibly or a 'charectaristic' of the notebook i have got,Its a Fujitsu Siemans Amilo with Centrino Duo, anyone else/ideas.
Thanks.

it had only just turned on when it shut off so was not hot, although it is a laptop it has a decent fan that i can turn on/off, so i can rule that one out.
Thanks anyway Len.

could be a virus

or

something drawing to much current and setting off the auto
cut off
sometimes a dying hard drive will cause that

I know if a computer that, while under development, had the same sort of problem.

The computer's manufacturer said that there is a bug in that particular graphics chip, and sometimes, like when displaying complex graphics or during certain scenes in movies, the chip senses overheating (not clear as to whether it actually overheats or just "thinks" it overheats) and it shuts down the computer. The ability to shut down the computer is a feature to keep the graphics chip from melting down.

Your computer may be experiencing something similar. Or it could be a software, firmware, or driver problem.

No not google it yet,
But been thinking it has only happened when not plugged into the main power supply and running on battery only, last night i was moving the laptop around a bit as i rest it on the arm of the sofa whilst i browse, and it did do it a few times and thinking back it only happened when i have had it in this position, so could be a battery connection thing...?, don't recall it happening when it on my desk plugged in 8 hours a day. :-k
Thanks for suggestions.

DANGER WILL ROBINSON: Try and keep laptops on a solid surface and not a bed or fabric sofa arm as this inhibits air flow.

Just a shot in the dark but there is also a time bomb that is not a true virus per se and is even done as a joke between f(r)iends. They send an attachment and when you open it drops a false icon on your desktop (usually Internet Explorer). You click the new icon and it is actually a shortcut to the shutdown process.

In the meantime keep the laptop on a solid surface and let us know if it happens again.

P.S. To keep an eye on your laptop's health you can download HW Monitor.
HWMonitor description

A hardware monitoring software that will read the system's main health sensors

HWMonitor is a hardware monitoring application that reads PC systems main health sensors: temperatures, voltages, fans speed.

HWMonitor handles the most common sensor chips, like ITE IT87 series, most Winbond ICs and others. In addition, HWMonitor can read modern CPUs on-die core thermal sensors, as well has HDD temperature via S.M.A.R.T and video card GPU temperature.

Special hardware monitors such as ABIT uGuru and Gigabyte ODIN power supplies serie are supported too.

Thanks woody,Len,RickF,Ter and IA..i am keeping it on a solid surface instead of half Armrest half Cushion...see what happens, it does get picked up and moved many times (at least 30) during the day, also getting carried around to and from without putting it in a case, also picking it up with one hand on 1 corner with the screen up can't help it, made that mistake with the last one cracked case over 2 years and that was a tuff IBM.
Ta.
------------
Edit: submitted the above message and then BAM off she goes, sitting on a solid surface too, so turn it back on, gets to option of restoring previous session on firefox and BAM off again, then again still on solid surface and laptop not moved...took battery out and clicked back in, ok at the moment.

Also young Jedi, try not to move a running laptop. Think of it like a needle on a vinyl record. Bump against an old record player and the record would jump. Same same hard drive. Very delicate things... All that movement if running may cause damage over a period of time.

Bm, give that a look see, you can download a catalyst driver pack from ATI. apparently the video driver card has the fault.

BM, don't know if you googled it or not but I did. It looks like a simple fix (famous last words from Westers). There are other forums giving similar advice.

it had only just turned on when it shut off so was not hot, although it is a laptop it has a decent fan that i can turn on/off, so i can rule that one out.

Don't take this the wrong way but are you sure? Those CPUs can get hot very quickly.
