live chat problems to holland

PostAuthor: d p meijer » May 5, 2009, 10:56 pm

i am staying in Holland at the moment and my wife is home in Udon. We try to have daily video contact with live messenger. sometimes acceptable picture and sound. but lately no sound or sound that has nothing to do with spoken words.
technician who checked the computer in udon told my wife that his girlfriend lately had the same problems when chatting with family in england/france.
is there anybody who could tell me why this problem occurs and if we can do something to solve it.
thanks in advance

Usually it's the Internet connection, which is not really up to 'European' standards over here, nothing to do with the computer although running a good anti-virus check is usually advisable anyway. I have the feeling that the bad Internet link affects messenger far worse then Skype. I am using Skype regularly to connect to friends/family in Holland and then we normally have good sound and reasonable video, but if I use messenger over the same line the whole connection regularly drops completely or you have either video or sound but not both together. So if possible you could try switching to Skype and see if that's better. Otherwise, try different times, usually I get the fastest lines very early in the morning, Udon time, and it's terrible in late afternoon or early evening.

Good Luck.

Hi

Yes I have had the same problems and not just to Thailand even within the UK !

I don't have any answers for you, but suggest that both parties have the same version of messenger running and that all drivers especially camera drivers are up to date.

I did need an up to date driver and that has cured some of the problems but not all, sometimes I get full picture both ends sometimes only one picture, but have always had speech.

The other problem can occur when the net is running slow, due to broken fibre optic cables or congestion.

Hope this helps
