Loosing weight, how do you cope?

PostAuthor: thalenoi » March 2, 2009, 12:12 pm

In the Christian year 2001 my weight was 70kgs.
Come October 2008: 84kgs.
That's an increase of 2kgs/year.
I stay in LOS for 5 months, lose 3kgs; go Europe gain 5.
Last October Europ visit I cut a lot but obviously not enough :(

Glucose level is up also: 2007:95, Oct 08:118, Feb 09: 123
Wife threw away chocolate (the real Belgian stuff) and cookies.
I eat lots of salads with chicken strips or tuna or an egg, tomato's, cucumbers etc , take utmost care MOST of the time (have not seen a moo kata for ages) and sometimes indulge myself with a spaghetti or Belgian fries.

Stopped the daily orange juice and jam on my bread etc etc
Do eat apples/oranges/Thai season fruit

Well I lost 6kgs in 4 months but still have 7/8 to lose to return to that magic 70 kgs.

Any one drove that road and what are/were the results?
How severe are you with yourselves?

Lots of nervous tension, coffee, cigarettes all do wonders for me. It's the only way
to combat nature's biological clock. I may not live to see 50 but I look good.

Congratulations on the weight loss Thalenoi!
You are losing it the correct way. Slow and gradual. "Quick weight loss programs" do not work in the long run, IMO.
sometimes indulge myself with a spaghetti or Belgian fries.

Yes, by all means, treat/indulge yourself occasionally. Remember, everything in moderation. :D

Thalenoi,

I have similar problem. In late 2007, weighed about 84 kg too. But during my first couple of weeks in Thailand each time, loose about 3 kgs. I find appetite less and i walk a lot (Thai winter, not to hard). The battle is on return to the UK. In UK, try to have good breakfast, which allows you to skip lunch if possible (need to be busy but not to active, or get hungry quickly) and cut down on the snacks, but if bored, not easy. But now 77kgs, reckon on getting to 70kgs too - that means another 2 or 3 visits to Thailand. Keep promising to do more exercise in UK, but weather does not help. The weather this winter in UK certainly is helping slim the bank account - latest bill £600 for gas! :yikes: :yikes:

I think it is all about sensible exercise and keep yourself busy doing something you like, to stop snacking; avoid energy dense foods (high fat, low fibre, low water content).

Have been fighting overweight since my wife married me (lucky girl! :^o ) and bunged my weight up with extra food in just 8 months, back in 1980, and i've never lost it since. In December 2007 even had new heart valve, and lost weight to begin with, but still drifted up to usual 15 stone, two and a half stone overweight! #-o Asked cardiologist on annual visit, with new valve should i lose excess weight and he looked at me and said "what do you think mate!?". :-k

I have been on the weight watchers diet (points based) since 2000, and i CAN recommend it, it is me that through lack of 'will power', fail. I 'comfort eat', and i need comfort a lot, and, well, there you go. I eat well, exercise a lot, but, just eat too much. BUT, today, is the start of my NEW diet its Monday, and this one WILL work, i know!!! If it doesn't, well, there is always next Monday......

I used to worry a lot about my weight, but it didn't seem to make any difference... so I quit worrying. :-"

I do not think diets work in the long term - you must change your life style. PhilR - as you say comfort eating is a big problem. Instead of comfort eating, try to find something else for comfort - do something you enjoy that does not involve food. Why do you need the comfort - something is wrong, so need to fix it.

It might just be the warmer weather, but is it not a coincidence that going to Thailand makes some of us shed the pounds? Because we are happier?

Probably because I have more excess wieght, but on Feb. 10th I weighed 125 Kg.,decided enough was enough and stopped sugar, obvious fat from meat and oils, all alcohol prducts, stopped eating rice and breads!

Instead I am eating roasted skinless chicken breasts, some pork with fat trimmed, lots of apples for snacks, tuna packed in water, steamed and roasted fish fillets w/lemon,drinking loads of water and just started brisk walking and some stair climbing, hopefully will expand the walking in distance constantly!

About 10 minutes of leg streches before and after have helped alot with the soreness!

3 weeks and I have dropped 7 Kgs.,which has made the exercise walking easier to do.I really need to get back in the gym because the machines keep me motivated with the time meters etc.

This was my 70th birthday present to myself as I was moaning and groaning about my age and aches and pains to damn much!

Keep up the good work Thailenoi,we can encourage each other! :D

You're right Rick, dieting is NOT permanent. Just thing about it... you decide to go on a diet so, inevitably this means you will, at some future time, go OFF the diet.

First of all congratulations on losing the weight thalenoi. The only diet I am on is a seafood diet... I see food and I eat it. I need more than a diet, I need to change my lifestyle... If only I didn't enjoy it so much... 8-[ Only going back to mid-2006 and I lived in Khon Kaen, I was virtually a non-drinker and I walked EVERY day in Bun Kan Nakorn for up to 2 hours.

I moved to Udon and hit the skids. I walk around Nong Prajak about once every 3 months. G/f has a lot to answer for (I have to blame somebody)... I think she has an eye condition like a fairground mirror and in her eyes I look anorexic. She might get hungry (again) about 9pm so we might go to a local Thai place or if she has something to eat indoors she gets the urge to balance things out and makes me a BLT.

Beer is a big issue... When we go out I have a few beers. I love going out for a few beers. G/f doesn't drink but I'll still go out alone to a nearby Thai place that constantly shows football... I'll watch La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, B or Z just for football fix... Maybe I'm in denial... 8-[

I mostly eat Thai food. Even a simple dish like kao man gai is just 600 calories, add that to a couple ( :^o ) of large Leos and that adds up to quite a large calorie intake per day.

I need to turn back the clock to when I stayed in more and ate sensibly... Amish Alan is back!

Hi All

Just been up to hospital and had my boys eye checked out (Conjunctivitus). while there I checked out my weight and bloodpressure on free to use equipment as I was concerned last time out my bloodpressure approaching serious levels.

Started walking 11.3k on a set walk usually in the heat of the day and timing to make sure I did'nt slack off. Allways walking as fast as I could with out looking stupid.

The results were very good. weight down about 8 k to 98k and bloodpressure down into the lowest level (out of 3 catagories)at 139 over something. (Supposed to be 100 + you age) very happy as 47 years of age. Also cut down on food intake thanks to a busy (slack) TW.

Been a bit slack this week but now I am inspired to go out again tomorrow and improve on my times and get my weight down to around 90k. Got a walking buddy tomorrow, always helps.

A year ago a friend of mine came over from the UK.We were out on the beer every night and also restaurants for lunch and evening meal.
When he left I weighed myself and my weight was 90kg....the highest it has ever been. Also my stomach looked like I was about to give birth to triplets !
It was looking at my stomach in the mirror that made me do something about it.
I used to jog a bit but started doing it for upwards of 20 minutes 5-6 times a week. Also, equally importantly,I cut back on the beer.I used to drink 7 days a week, probably around 20 pints a week.
I cut back to just 2-3 times a week consuming around 7 pints in total weekly.
Also tried to eat more healthily by incorporating more fish into my diet instead of red meats.
Within 6 months I had lost 10kg and was a much more healthy looking 80kg.
I've maintained this weight although times where I hit the beer and do less exercise such as Xmas,New Year, weekends in Bangkok etc.its easy for me to put on 2-3kg so I quickly have to get back to the more healthy lifestyle.
