Mac takes bite .......

PostAuthor: Dakoda » November 9, 2005, 10:17 am

Hardly a week goes by that I don't hear from a friend or colleague with a monumental Windows problem.

I tell them I'm glad to help, on one condition: Next time they buy a computer, they agree to consider a Macintosh. A year ago, after a particularly trying week of spyware, adware, viral attacks, lock-ups and reboots, I changed my primary computer to a Mac.

When I made the switch, I thought I was a relative rarity. After all, we're constantly reminded of the Windows desktop monopoly and how little market share Apple has.

But what I found surprised me. A lot of techies I know, including some former Micro-softies, have switched. Among holdouts, I kept hearing their next computer would be a Mac.

I must admit, that I am seriously considering making the change when my current system(s) go up the swanny.

The only prohibitive problem with Macs for me are the price, I can build myself a basic pc here for less than ฃ120 (9000 baht) and one with all the bells and whistles for double that and maintenance is almost zilch.

I could build 4 of the above for less than the price of one Mac, I really think that I should look into the how to's of building one I guess, surely it's not that difficult.

Or maybe just throw Linux onto my next pc build to get a feel for what a mac is all about :)

Yes Sean, like you, given an even playing field I would certainly go for a Mac next time. Apart from the initial purchase price getting hold of lower cost software ( if you see what I mean) is also that much more difficult for a mac.

Just found this site that helps to transform a pc into a mac

http://www.engadget.com/entry/8828351836181248/

but before you all start jumping around with joy, it's only the look and feel of a mac, not quite a full transformation, but it's a start i suppose 8)

By the way Bob, I can get my hands on some cheap as chips software for macs, nowhere near as much variety, but it's there if you search the torrents hard enough ;)

You can get a Mac mini for (499 usd) 20k baht, and use your old monitor and keyboard/mouse. When I bought my iMac in BKK it came with a lot of free software, like MS office. When I was looking for a CAD/CAM I could use and understand to design an addition to a house, for 100 baht got something in BKK. I had downloaded three others for trial, and all were to complicated to use, except one.

Apple Store

ps: If into gaming I would keep a PC around for that, so they tell me. 8)
