Have not heard of any in our area Westers, though the brother in law got dengue and ended up in hospital a couple of years ago. I ended up in hospital with a fever last year and the doc said there was no chance of malaria in that area.
Though I have stopped giving blood in the Uk as they class all of thailand a Malaria area now. So I sleep under a net as I don't like a/c not worth the risk I have enough things breaking down with me :D

Udon Thani is to the best of my information relatively malaris free, the occasional person may contract it during their jaunts in northern Thailand but not normally, however Dengu fever the ,mmild sort can give you the same effects . It is the Dengue fever that is boundaryless, not so malaria which inghabits the northern provinces mainly jungle type places.
Ther is a,ot of bugs around that can give you sneezes, coughs and even make you feel a touch off, but it ain't malaria.

2005, so couple years old, and current news that new drug resistant strain along cambodian/thai border have a few worried.

Code: Select all
According to statistics, 41,975 patients were reported in the first nine months of this year, 47 of whom have died. The central region had the highest number of patients, followed by the northeastern, southern and northern regions.

also remember reading something, quite some time ago, but surprised me, the numbers, say 20 k cases from people trekking, and most were from kanchanaburi area, which i didn't think was that big a trekkiing spot as chiang mai/rai/pai/and other northern areas. most were foreigners, very few of the guides were infected, but guessing, covered well, as farang is running around in joggers and shorts. still looking for old article, but if google thialand/malaria, will get new news about new strain near camb. border, if that interest you. 8)
