Police busts prostitution ring at alternative medicine centre | DATE: 2009-05-06
The Maldives Police Service raided a clinic in Malé which was registered as an alternative medicine centre on suspicion that it was actually operating a brothel.
Speaking at a press conference held at Police HQ, Inspector Hamdhoon Rasheed of the Serious and Organized Crimes Unit said that Police had raided the clinic called “Talk More Alternative Health Care” on the night of 30 April around 8:30pm. Hamdhoon said that they had arrested four Thai women who were working there and the women had, during interrogations, confessed to being prostitutes.
Hamdhoon further said that the four women, who even had work permits allowing them to practice alternative medicine, had also been in possession of a large amount of money. Police however did not reveal how much money had been found in their possession.
There had been no ‘customers’ at the clinic when the Police had raided the place, Hamdhoon said, adding that no Maldivians had been arrested in connection to the case yet. He said that since the clinic was owned by a Maldivian, they were investigating the possibility that the person was involved in the operation.
