I was back in Nong Khai last week and noticed the Monsoon bar on Rim kong has changed its name to Manchester or something like that. Me and the wife enjoyed some great evenings there back in November with the owner (think his name was Glyn). It's got great views of the river and the owner Glyn was an interesting & friendly host. But I went past last week a couple of times and only saw Thais in there. Has it changed hands? Is it still a farang owned bar? :-k

Yes, you are correct, it has changed names, and owners...I've updated the title :)

It is now called the Manchester, seemingly because the new owner, Steve, was a local to the area back home in the UK, so yes, it is still Farang owned (unless somethings changed very recently).

As for being frequented by locals, it's good to see them coming into some farang style establishments I think.

Welcome to the forum by the way, udonflyer :)

Thank you for the update Sean. And may I also congratulate you on a great web-site. A friend from Udon referred me to NongKhaimap.com as he knows I'm a frequent visitor to the area. Very good source of information!

The wife and I will make a point of dropping into the newly named Manchester bar next time we're up there. It's just up from the New York Bistro - one of our favourite farang restaurants in north Isaan.

As I recall, the original Monsoon hadn't been opened that long. Does anyone know what happened to Glyn, the previous owner? He was a great host, always made us feel welcome and relaxed - like we were sitting in his lounge room - although 5 to 6pm can get a bit noisy there with the aerobics going on. Anyway, we wish him all the best.

As far as I know, Glyn had to return to Australia for health reasons, I'm sure he will be paying us a visit again soon.

Yep, the original Monsoon was probably open for around 4 months or thereabouts, nice atmosphere, which I am sure Steve has transferred to the Manchester bar. As for the aerobics, well at least it forces you to remember the time of the day :).

Thanks for the comments on the site, still more to be worked through though.
