Medical Cost

PostAuthor: papaguido » August 22, 2005, 6:27 pm

For anyone that's interested. While on my recent visit to Udon I developed an ear infection which required medical attention. My wife took me to an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor. Three visits plus medication for under $20.00. 20 bucks in the US wouldn't have covered my prescription.

I'm definitely interested.

I'm prone an infection of one ear, but in all my visits to Udon I have not (so far) developed any infections despite the much higher ambient temperatures and frequent use of swimming pools - but it's only a matter of time before it happens. :(

Where is this ENT Doctor based and do you have a name for him?

Jimbo, I think you hit on a service that if the Guys that are there would not mind would really be a service to the ones coming is to list any Doctor or specialist that they would reccomend. It would be nice to have that info and not just go wandering in and hope. Even a good General Prac. would be of good help . How about a good Dentist. Made my point and will now wait and see.

Dentist;

On the same road as the shopping mall but lower down through the crossroads towards the bus station. In between the 7-11 and the 407 bus company is a small dentist. The woman in there speaks excellent English and her work is 1st class - however she is not the cheapest in Udon.
I paid 15000 baht for two crowns (start to finish) and there was xxx % gold content in them, hence the cost.

Dentists make me have a cold sweat of fear, but this woman made me feel completely at ease - and so did the ever so cute assistants who took my mind off all that pain :)

Thanks Paul For that price I will buy a plane ticket from the US and be on my way and still save money.

Honestly that will be of value when I do get there. I only hope we get a good list of the med. Profession for only the time it is needed. Like stated before when we have been in Thailand before if something was needed it was either go the a pharmacy, wander around a just pick a doc by the good pic on window or go to am emergency room. It worked but with long term stay would like to establish a better relationship than that.

again thanks.

That's not a bad price for 2 crowns when compared to BKK. Had one porcelain crown done at Bangkok Dental Spa for about 17,500B, but that included foot massage during exam & one hour full body oil massage after.

Think I'll try your dentist next time through :)

This is making me think that it would be great to have a thread just for local specialised doctors and dentists that have been tried and tested in the local area, to be listed in , any thoughts admin??.

Thanks for the followup BB but while we are doing this lets really dream.

First I want to say please Guys and Gals post your Medical Practictionars so we will have the info.

Now back to the dream. Would it be practical to link to the medical facilities in Udon and Nong Khai. some of them have sites and some of them need updates and maybe by linking them with their permission it might encourage them to keep current and also be more responsive to questions sent to them. Also if a visit to the Dentist that Paul suggested, would that dentist become a sponsor and possibly add someting to the site like a monthly article. Ask and you might be surprised as most folks like to speak if asked. Would AEK and Military hospital lke to submit a monthly better health article.

like I said a dream but possible to help better the ties.

at palo hospital, i just had root canal done, 3 visits for a 3 rooted molar, cost less than 6000 baht. she drilled thru the crown, thus saving the expense of replacing that, which would of been 6 or 7000 baht for porcelin crown, 2000 baht more for crown w/alloy, 4000 more i think w/gold. this root canal was the result of a bad crown being placed on by the highly regarded bumragud hospital in bkk. basic crown 7000, 12000 w/alloy, 14000 w/gold. dentist turned into nightmare when i demanded basic, after she tried to force gold and alloy on me without even asking. tooth never was right afterward, one year later and had to be reworked. i've been happy with palo hospital for everything. little happier with service and cheaper than aek udon. had a complete physical w/extras and less than 3000 baht. blood work, ekg, ultrasounds, upper and lower intestinal checks, oh fun. health care is very cheap here. dentist are little high for thai pricing, but mainly because everything is imported. as i seen nothing but products with english labels, name brand stuff and equipment. but still, most med and dental, i couldn't have dont in states for the price of co payments on insurance.

in the states, you have to go to your primary care taker, who refers you to specialist, who write script. 20 + 20 + 10 + 10, 2 co payments for drs, 2 for scripts, and i've never spent that much on normal visit here, usually 400-600 baht, includes hosp, nurse, dr and med fee. that's less than one co payment. also very easy to self treat yourself, if you know what you're doing and want. go in and order any test, and can usually go to any non hospital pharmacy and get your meds without script. very happy with medical services here. only negative, if you have certain health issues and you need something high tech, usually bkk or tourist area will only offer it.

if you don't mind waiting, you can go to local hospital that doesn't cater to bigger wallets and cut you cost considerably. but it can take couple hours in and out, and for my stress benefit, it's well worth the extra for 5 min wait, service, then leave. just getting your script and paying bill can take an hour at udon hospital, not for me.

I don't know about the other folks getting ready to make the move to Udon but this is the type of great input by Paul and LA that is very useful. I surehope others continue with this thread. This is not my first Rodeo to be coming to Udon but I still do not live there and it is a help.

Well as you said such nice things, I will tell you about the clinic I usually use. I couldnt tell you exactly where it is (but I can show you) - its near Tung Sri Muang (town centre) and is almost like a drop in clinic. You go in and the receptionist will ask you to fill in a form and tell her briefly what is wrong - then you take a seat. A few minutes later you will be called in and the doctor (who speaks English) will look at you and ask questions etc, and then send a note off to reception. You get yourself together, make your way back to reception where, waiting for you will be any medicines etc prescribed by the doctor.

I have never paid more than a couple of hundred baht - for everything , in this place, and the last time I went there I was not charged anything, as it was just a quick look by the doctor and nothing prescribed.

Cant beat it really !

Again Thanks Paul. I am not a computer genious but I would like to ask Admin and BB (As you ask above) is there someway to formalize this information and to peridocally update it. Medical information is someting retirees look for when moving to a new location. It is not only retirees but any international Corp. looking to locate facilites.

Could this dream become reality? We can dream.

Unfortunately, many Thai businesses (especially in Udon) have yet to wake up to the world of the internet and websites etc. , and for my two bahts worth, you cannot beat first hand (honest) opinions from the people that actually frequent these places, and who can give more up to date information than any website ever could.

You ask the questions and we will answer them - and all for the price of a beer when you attend one of the monthly meetings :)

Keep em' coming

I never got his name, but I'll get back with the details. He is located on Phosi Rd., left handside as your driving away from fountain circle towards Nong Prajak park on the stretch of road in grid 11-K. There's a frame shop next door and is near the corner of a one way street. Small office, Dr. speaks and understands a little English and never more than a 5-minute wait during my visits. I'll ask the wife for more details and post later.
