I have asked myself the same question. My BUPA insurance is nearly worthless if you count the exclusions and their payment schedule. What I do get is a card for my wallet that will get me into an emergency room, even if there is no money in it. Beyond that, I have to agree -most health and accident insurance available around here (and I looked at everything einsurethailand.com had to offer this time last year) is a pretty sad deal. And as you point out, if your ambulance gets stuck in traffic, then what's the point, anyway.

Are there many farangs over 60 with no health insurance ? Insurance companies will not cover over 60s.
There way of thinking, over 60, on their death beds!
Recently,Big Dave had an accident.Although was covered, his limit of cover was reached.(I think 50,000 bht) As he he needed more treatment, Some of us members offered extra finance to help him out.
I was thinking, is it possible to have a kind of mutual health scheme between us farangs? Just for hospital treatment.If they put in say,3,000 baht a month,and even 10 people,Thats 30,000 baht a month
Or 180,000 baht 6 months.There could be a limit of say 100,000 baht payed out.At least that would break the back of a hospital bill.
But of course it would be difficult to implement. would need a contract laid out ect.Maybe too many "ifs and buts"
This is my biggest worry here in Thailand...no health insurance.
Ah well just a thought!

Well ,I filled out a request form for quotes from the Thaivisa insurance site and never got an answer.Don't know if their policy is to not reply if someone doesn't qualify or not.

I wasn't optimistic because of my age although I have never been hospitalized,just a lot of OP treatments for broken bones etc.,never had any major health problems in my life other than neck and back problems!

I do suppose my age will disqualify me,but curiosity got the best of me!!

I got medical insurance for the misses and me about 4 years ago from AIA.
Cost about B60,000 for 8 years then next 12 years free
Wife got rushed to hospital 9 months later, was in for 5 nights and had to have an op.
AIA state you have to pay "up front" during the first year, and then they reimburse you.
Paid the hospital B42,000 and claimed from AIA and got precicely nothing back, even after getting a solicitor to write to them. Soliciter eventually said we can "probably" get them to pay out by taking them to court, but it's not really worth the time and effort to fight such a big company, as it will take years and they will have a "top" legal team on their side

Much to my annoyance, and against my usual "cut of my nose to spite my face" attitude, I bowed to pressure, and now just resort to letting as many people as I can, know what a bunch of theiving B*stards AIA are, and hope that they have lost a lot more than they "stole" from me

I too had bad experience with AIA.

Quoted me for yearly cover, paid the premium and then asked for another 20,000Baht to cover health problems that had already been mentioned in the original quote.

Eventually got my money back. If my life depended on them I wouldn't be confident that they would be much help.

that's pretty much the experience i've had with every insurance carrier, whether private or gov't. i'll never have health or home owners insurance again.

I had a quote ins company (US)Bare minimum cover.....3,785 $ year! What tops it all the above experiences rip off not paying up!

Got a reply from Thaivisa insurance!Looks like they will insure me after an exam for about 10,000 (118,000)a month to 15,000(180,000) a month depending on which plan Maxi or Ultra up to age 71,then it jumps up to 177,000 or 260,000 per yr. for 71 up to 76.There might be 10-30% discounts available ,if you opt out for OP treatments and others!

I have to disagree with that...
I was just released from AEK, following a seven night stay (one in ICU). I was admitted for acute appendicitis, had emergency surgery, etc., etc.
My total hospital charges were around 93,000 baht, BUPA PAID: 87,700 baht. I paid the balance, which included some ineligible charges and my wife's room service charges.
There was no hassle involved, from the hospital or BUPA.
I have BUPA's "Emerald" Plan.

BTW, my agent is a farang, who has his business in Chonburi, he has worked with BUPA for close to twenty years. I haver never heard one negative thing from any of his clients.
