I am involved in the international trade in milk powders for compound stock feed use in Japan. The Japanese blend many products including dairy products to make stock feeds for the farm animals of Japanese farmers.
My main customer advised:
Melamin problem is now spreading to all protein feed ingredients made in China, like soybean meal, corn gluten meal and cotton seed meal.
Chinese government starts to inspect all those stuffs for export or import now.
Actually melamin was traded among Chinese feed mills under the name of PROTEIN ESSENCE(DANBAIJING).
unquote

What has happened is apparently that the liquid milk for human consumption was watered down by the Chinese suppliers of milk to the dairy companies, then these suppliers added "protein essence" to it to disguise the drastically reduced protein level in the milk caused by the addition of water. Most people in the Chinese dairy companies except those corrupt individuals "in the know" would not have noticed the illegal inclusion of the protein essence because the milk showed normal protein levels when tested by the Chinese dairy companies.

This "protein essence" secretly added to Chinese ingredients to restore the protein level of US pet foods, is the cause of the contaminated pet foods scandal which caused the deaths of thousands of domestic cats and dogs in the USA 2 years ago.

Milk products coming from China and Taiwan having problems!!!

We can check to see where the products are made from
by looking at the first three digits of its bar code.

If the 1st 3 digits are 690, 691 or 692 - the products are China-made.
If the 1st 3 digits are 471 ? then it is Taiwan-made.

Thailand's S&P recalls cookies nationwide

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) — One of Thailand's most popular bakery chains, S&P, said Tuesday it was recalling all its packaged cookies from stores nationwide after Swiss authorities said they found high concentrations of melamine in the Thai biscuits.

"S&P will pull all its cookies from its 280 outlets nationwide as a precautionary measure," said Witoon Sila-on, vice president of business development at S&P Syndicate PCL.

Swiss authorities on Monday said that tests of Milk Cookies S&P found high melamine levels and called on other European countries to withdraw the products.

Witoon said the company had never exported its cookies to Switzerland and questioned where the sample came from. But he said the company would submit samples to Thailand's Food and Drug Administration to determine "whether our cookies are safe for consumption."

Witoon said the cookies in question included milk powder that was imported from Australia and did not use milk powder from China.

Melamine in milk has been blamed in the deaths of four infants and for sickening more than 54,000 others in mainland China.

Milk with heavy melamine content seized ;

The Public Health Ministry's Food and Drug Administration has seized canned unsweetened condensed milk manufactured by a Thai firm from shelves throughout the country after they found heavy melamine contamintion.

Deputy Public Health Minister Vicharn Minchainant said on Wednesday the Mali brand milk product was contaminated with melamine far in excess of acceptable safety standards

seizure was made after the was informed by the ministry's Medical Sciences Department that tests found Mali brand condensed milk tins weighing 385 grammes with the expiry date of 160109 and manufactured by Thai Milk Industries Co Ltd to be melamine-tainted.

According to Mr. Vicharn, the particular lot of Mali milk contained 92.82 mg/kg of melamine, far exceeding the maximum safe level of 2.5 mg/kg.

Mali milk as well as other products using similar raw materials were recalled from stores nationwide, he said.

FDA officials visited the company's factory in Ayutthaya. The company said it imported raw materials from Belgium, Switzerland, Australia, Germany and India.

Mr. Vicharn said the company's owner could face a maximum two years in prison, a fine of 20,000 baht or both.

The FDA earlier collected samples of 10 products for tests, with six testing as having acceptable levels. Three other product results are yet to be released.

The tainted milk scandal began in China, where four babies have died and about 54,000 infants became ill from melamine in baby formula. (TNA)

Mmmm how does 20000 baht equate to 2 years in the slammer.... :-s

Taiwan has a very small dairy industry and imports most of its requirements for domestic use, blending and re-packing from ANZ (I supply Oz UHT milk to Taiwan),but I have supplied milk powders from India to Taiwan but I don't know if Taiwan has imported Chinese milk powder or not. Recently I was offered dextrin used in the manufacture of french fries made in the Chinese factory of a Taiwanese company.

Therefore can you be certain that milk coming from Taiwan is surely "clean"?

Judging by all reports available it seems that this tainted powder has found its way to all sorts of companies and countries.
China I am sure is not at all happy about the turn of events, however none of us can be complacent, my sweet tooth is suffering and will continue to do so for some months I fear, but it is the babies who are most at risk, and I hope none here are affected.

My advice would be to stick with the major ANZ, US, Japanese and the main European brands like Nestle which have very sound quality control. Avoid other Asian brands (they use imported milk powder) also Eastern European brands, until the Chinese melamine and overall quality situation has been brought under control.

In some developing countries including some Eastern Europe countries and India (which has the biggest dairy industry in the world) many of the farmers over-treat their sick cows with antibiotics which pass into the milk. Some of these antibiotics are dangerous, one of them, chloramphenicol is a known human carcinogen. Of course in the countries I mentioned as safe, such antibiotic treatment is prohibited and the dairy laboratories watch for it constantly.
