Mini VHS camcorder tapes to DVD?

PostAuthor: lee » February 11, 2006, 6:42 pm

Does anyone know of a shop in Udon Thani that can transfer mini VHS camcorder tapes to DVD?

I have the VHS tapes with me in Thailand but the camera is in the UK. I've just noticed that one of the tapes has a fine mold forming on top of the tape, probably happend through the rain season? I'd better do it soon before they're all ruined.

Hi Lee,
I don't know of a shop in Udon that offers this service, although I feel sure there will be one!!
If you can locate one of these converters, and a VHS(PAL) VCR.. you can do it your self (in conjuction with the kit shown in Pauls DVD thread).
Shops can be expensive if you have a lot of footage to convert.
This piece of kit costs about 2000 Baht or less.

Lee:

I use 'PhotoLife' the huge Fuji shop opposite the police station yo transfer my 8mm video tape films to vcd. they do it with a machine - like a video player so there is no need for your camera.

Now the big question is whether they do mini tapes also? sorry I don't know but it might be worthwhile asking as when I saw their equipment they seem to have quite an array!

Thanks for the information guys. I don't have that many tapes so the Fuji shop sounds like the best option.

Any idea how much it costs to convert each tape?

What about copying/transferring old colour slides (35mm film) onto VCD?

I've got boxes of old slides that I could dispense with, if I could get them transferred onto VCD. Does anyone have any knowledge of if and where I could get them done and the likely costs, as I have a lot?!

Lee
Its not the tapes that they charge by - but the VCD - so they will fill one vcd and charge around 200/300 baht - no matter how many tapes it takes to fill it (or as per your instructions (eg - one tape per VCD)
The Sony Shop in town (in between the two roundabouts) will put tapes onto DVD for about 600 per DVD but as you will be aware you can fit rather more onto a DVD - I do not know if they can cater to the mini camcorder tapes though.

Is it not cheaper and better to get a converter to enable you to play them on a normal size player - and then get one of the kits mentioned above to make your own discs? Suppose it depends on how many tapes you have to do?

I am currently trying to source one of the kits and get it sent out but haven't made much progress yet - as there isn't a real rush for me to do it - but if and when I do manage to get the kit - you will be welcome to borrow it of course :) - Depends if you need it done NOW or like me its one of theose things you want to do when you get a moment.

I would advise a slide scanner for this purpose, this enables you to scan any type of slide or transparent 35mm film and then covert them to jpeg photos. You can then store them on CD or any other storage devise. I think prices for these scanners start at 3,000 - 4,000 baht.
