Monthly Meetings in Udonmap Sponsors Bars

PostAuthor: Prenders88 » August 10, 2008, 10:45 pm

What happened to the monthly meetings that used to be in a Udonmap Sponsors Bar?

They were a great way of introducing visitor's and residents to Udon's fine City.
Now with the Cowshed and Soi Lunatic on stream there is now lots of choice.

Maybe I should not comment on this as I don't presently live in Thailand but did for two years recently.

Now that I have done my public disclosure here goes.

I think the monthly meeting being held at the night market is the right thing. When it was held in bars mostly guys showed up and very few wives/girlfriends. Not saying that is wrong just not conducive to TW/GF meeting up. Also the meeting were usually boring as only a few showed up. Since it has moved to the market, a lot more folks showed up as well as TW/GF along with children. Has made for a more lively group.

Now as for a suggestion, and suggestion only, why not say at 10pm (a time suggestion only), those that would like to go to a sponsors establishment, adjourn and meet back up at a pre determined point. This way the sponsors could be prepared and welcome the guest maybe with a bit of appetizers.

As stated this would be a suggestion and all could participate.

I agree 100% with banpaeng. Moving our meetings to a sponsor's bar would cut the participation of our members to at least 50% if not more. I'm sure the sponsors get plenty of 'bang for their buck' when they advertise in the Udon Map Mag. and Map and also, how fair would it be to those sponsors that are not a bar but some other type of business? I think we should stay with the NM meeting place and if members want to gravitate to other locations later on, that strictly up to them.

Is wasn't much of a trial, but we did move the meeting to a sponsors close by(Richmonds)! It was very disruptive to the familiar and festive environment that develops after a group ''settles'',although a bonanza for the sponsor!I think most of those that particpated felt the same way although it didn't get much discussion! The next time it was suggested, nobody wanted to move!

As it stands now,it gets alot of people out and together that wouldn't always be out and about that night! Some of those drift off to other venues later anyway!

I like the NM because it is large and open, except for the seating,I don't feel so confined!I don't like small venues with staff trying to expedite orders!

Sometimes we get so many people that many of the sponsors facilities would not be able to handle them anyway.Self service for food is a plus in this situation!

We are not a fraternal group, organized and such, that could make timely commitments to a business in order to get the service we would need!

I suggest that the Udonmap staff make monthly or weekly meetings at the sponsors establishments and ask forum members that want to join them to commit to the meeting! ;)

I enjoy being at the NM, as most of the expats come with family. Wifes can shop a bit and kids can play at the games. The food is good (som tom and pla), beer not expensive(buy 3 Tigers get one free) and lots of eye candy walking around to look at. Also you are not getting all the "Over here darling" or "Hello Handsome, over here". The NM seems the best place to start and then later venture to other venues for those who want to, such as the DN or NP, up to them.

it seem the opinions have been submitted and mine also go along with them. I like the N/M
for the get together if only the bench was little wider it would be perfect. the old saying is if it works don't fix it

For reasons above I think the monthly night market meeting should continue, as said above it's more a family venue and everyone enjoys it.

I did make a suggestion last year for a weekly get together at the local bars but nothing really came of it. I guess we need someone to take the plunge and organize something and see if it generates any interest.

hmm, someone said '67' bars in udon, soon to be. ok, round down to 52, know where i'm going with it. you can get the advertising as sponsors, you'll need a larger rake, for raking in all that money. it would take us a year to visit them all.

my liver is good for once a week, though i'm trying to save it, for future, might need it. now if only 10 of us could actually make a commitment we could keep and a weekly basis. it was hard enough on a monthly, though many more seem to be regulars and may be up for an out and about weekly. little one is my problem, as not liking to leave behind, so early arrive and depart for myself.

some more input from those maybe up for some experimenting, since we do have so many new places, i don't get out much and am curious. hard getting away from that NM, car seems to be on autopilot. 8)

I agree with the monthly meetings continuing at the Night Market.

It is a friendly venue with a large choice of food available, entertainment on the big screen and pleasant serving wenches.

I have a small circuit of bars I visit a few times a week. Out of curiosity I will visit a newly opened bar but if the first impression is not favourable they have lost me. My Baht, my choice.

While I appreciate the sponsors pay for the forum I feel no particular need to visit them to show my appreciation.

I agree with the monthly meetings continuing at the Night Market.

doubt if that is ever going to change, as taken off very well, and too much to offer everyone's different taste. besides the pricing.

but it was nice, last meeting, couple headed over to G-spot, member's friend place, a curiousity run for couple of us. and the grand opening last week was nicely done. throw in some crab racing at Grasshopper, i missed, but from vid, i saved a wager or 2, as i suck at the horse track also. but again, nice to see a new place, owners very personable. though having to force myself, even as late arrival as out the night before. shame, buffet items looked tasty.

as it was so hard for Paul to get the monthly meetings together and running, maybe since more of us already here and friends, we might be able to get to some of these new places. who knows. i know myself, rito, cliff, and john when in town are usually good for a few if announced early enough and planned a bit ahead, without conflicting schedule, another problem. but would hate to have owners go to far out of way, and then just us few show up, for short visit, as happened the first year of monthly meetings way back when.

so many grand openings coming up in the future, maybe hard to fit our sponsors in, unless already sponsors. 8) 8) cya all at the next grand opening/affair. at least for short visit and couple bevs. 8)

Certainly for me, I feel the night market is by far the best option, for the following reasons:

Good for families (some TW/GF, would not feel comfortable in the bars) but I would!!!!!!

Everyone knows where the monthly meeting takes place, so no need to advertise the venue each month

Plenty of space

Easy to find for initiates to the monthly meetings

Cheap beer

Cheap, Varied & plentiful food outlets close at hand

If the TW/GF wishes to go shopping they can, giving the lads some time on their own

I am certain the majority of the ladies thoroughly enjoy their monthly gossip sessions

I believe that the attendance figures, would reduce by at least 50%

As Ronnie said, " If it ain't broke, Don't fix it"
