I has similar a while back bear, but it was not every time I started the pc. I found that unplugging the mouse & then re-plugging it in would make it come to life - rather than re-booting.
I did think about reloading the mouse software (or buying a new one :( ) but then, suddenly, the problem just stopped.
I would think that it can only be a 'glitch' in either the mouse software, or your operating system software. Reloading the mouse drivers might well solve it - either way...

Bear, I've had similar problems in the past. On one occasion I solved it by replacing the mouse. On another occasion it was caused by damage to the hard drive.

As Bob suggests I would first try reloading your mouse software, removing & replacing your mouse, or try another mouse.

I had this problem as well. Solved it by connecting the mouse to a USB port rather than the specified one.

Sounds like it might be a USB problem -the mouse isn't being seen by the computer at boot up.

As Trubrit suggests, moving the mouse to a different USB port, or connecting directly to the port on the computer instead of through a hub might solve the problem. Also, getting a new mouse might do it as well (I replaced a keyboard that had this problem).

Good luck!

I thought some one was talking about Jam until I read the headline I must be getting senile
any way they gave you the best advice I could not ad any thing to it just a small note if your mouse is hooked to a USB port you can buy the attachment to the mouse will connect to the green port next to the purple port were you plug your keyboard in 2nd floor complex

There are likely two or four ports on the computer itself. Before you give up, make sure you have tried the mouse in each of those ports, with nothing else connected to any of the USB port.

When you replaced the mouse, did you replace it with one of the same kind? (It could be a design problem with the mouse).

The next step would be to take to a good repair shop and let the repair person work on the problem. Just make sure you get your original parts back (not how much memory you have, the S/N of your hard drive, scratch you initials into the motherboard, etc.) :(

Bear, you haven't said what operating system you are using, but if it is Windows then it would be worth your while starting it up in safe mode & see if that gives you any clues.
It might also be worth going to the Control Panel, selecting mouse & Troubleshoot (if you are using XP, unsure if the same in Vista).
It sounds to me more like a software problem than a hardware one. For some reason the operating system is not recognising the mouse on start up. If it was hardware related I would not imagine that a re-boot would cure it...

p.s. have you tried starting the pc with the mouse unplugged and then plugging it in when everything has fully loaded??

Would it by any chance be a Philips brand? I had this problem with two, exchanged free each time. When the third one went , I slung it in the bin.
