Thanks for the help guys I was about to ask about international warranties and LA came through. So I guess there are shops in town that will service Compaq and HP's how about any other i.e. Dell or Gateway?

I'm not sure I will help buy said laptop for my father in-law as I'm thinking of using an international pet shipping service to bring the old green buzzard over and waiting for a quote from them :?

Be careful I've known plenty of people in LOS who have bought coms. and all had piriteted XP on. I have a 3 and a halve year old laptop and was trying to update it this Xmas. What a laugh all the laptops did not come up to the spec. off my old one and I would be downgrading. This was even with laptops costing over 35,000B. Plus 6,000B to get gen. XP.

Hope you all had a merry Christmas and are looking foreward to the New Year.

Cheers Doug.

You should check out www.tohome.com. Its an online retailer here in Thailand--it will give you an idea of the Thai prices which you can compare to your local prices.

It's as simple as can be. When buying the laptop connect to the web and perform Windows Update. Then you will see immediately what you get.

One bad thing I can see buying a laptop here in the US is it will come loaded with Vista. I only had a few experances with Vista as trying to setup a home network with a friends laptop running Vista and I'm running XP and all I can say is what a PITAImage

I read somewhere that MS did a reversal and are allowing XP to be sold. I just skimmed over the article so I didn't get all the details. I'll see if I can dig it up.

I have a buddy who builds computers and is still building them with XP if there is a request for it.

The one problem I've heard with Vista is that it has some problems with certain programs. If you are using your laptop only for file storage, surfing the net, and some other incidental computing, Vista should be fine.

If you're working in many different programs in audio, video, computer graphics, web design, etc., you may run into some snags.

I found the article, but I interpret it incorrectly.

Anyway, according to this article MS is extending the purchase of XP until about March.

I don't see John doing anything more than just surfing the web and maybe watching online movies from the states. With my laptop I do play around with A/V stuff so I'll be sticking with XP. I guess we'll share a wireless router I'll setup once I arrive. Maybe later MS will figure out to network XP and Vista.

that's about the extend of my laptop use, have vista, and quite happy with it, especially being very skeptical before having. actually prefer it over xp, for my use. upgraded programs are very nice, better burning and music/media handling. only thing i miss, i wouldn't load older ms money. photoshop works fine, along with a few others i added. couple bells and whistles and i'm easily pleased. it's not better or worst than xp, but if using for work and need older programs, stick with xp.
